In eighteen novels over twenty years, William Kent Krueger has enthralled readers with the adventures of P.I. Cork O’Connor, former sheriff of Aurora, Minnesota—selling more than 1.5 million copies of his books and winning the Edgar Award, Minnesota Book Award, Northeastern Minnesota Book Award, Dilys Award, Lovey Award, and Anthony Award along the way. Now, in this special anniversary edition, longtime fans and new readers alike can read the novel that first introduced Corcoran “Cork” O’Connor to the world.
Part Irish, part Anishinaabe Indian, Cork is having difficulty dealing with the marital meltdown that has separated him from his children, getting by on heavy doses of caffeine, nicotine, and guilt. Once a cop on Chicago’s South Side, there’s not much that can shock him. But when the town’s judge is brutally murdered, and a young Eagle Scout is reported missing, Cork takes on this complicated and perplexing case of conspiracy, corruption, and a small-town secret that hits painfully close to home.

Good read!
5By HollyJoMcTA bit out of bounds every now and then but, for the most part, a good read. Interesting characters, good guys not always good, but managed to defeat the bad guys. Will definitely read another Krueger book.Wow!
5By Scott_A_Miller5 Stars. WOW! What a debut novel. One of the better Firsts that I think I have ever read Krueger is going to be great to get to know. Cork seems to have a remarkable amount of potential, and so many places for Krueger to take him. The true villains in this one were a judge and a politician. I’m incredibly late to the Cork O’Connor Series party but it really feels relevant to the world around us today. I’m not sure I will have a long wait before going after the next one. This was a great book!Story, Characters, Writing
5By BandtheCIf you are a fan of this genre then this is a strong choice. Well-developed characters, excellent descriptive setting and mood, and an interesting story with many parallel plot lines.Iron lake
2By GWYNEDD READERNot his best work. Would be an interesting story for a movie.Suspenseful!
4By GinterrThe writing was highly effective at putting me in the place. The story was convoluted enough that I couldn’t figure it out. Extra credit for that.Suspense Master
5By bonmimKrueger is the best at writing suspenseful novels with characters to stay with you. Love the way he incorporates the Native American plight in small town Minnesota.Just a beautiful book.
5By GazaafIt’s been many years since I’ve enjoyed a book so much. Reading Iron Lake, was like being with a dear friend, I did not want to put this book down, and yet did not want to finish reading! Loved every page!Very good
3By RecruiterrickGood pace, interesting, nice action. Pretty much what I want from a book. First read from this author, it won't be my last.Iron Lake
5By DustyGeorgeWilliam Kent Keueger does for the Minnesata North Woods what James Lee Burke does for the Louisiana Bayou Country. Except Krueger does it better. (Maybe I'm biased because I'm from Minnesota.). Krueger's main character, Corcoran (Cork) O'Conner, like Burke's Dave Robicheaux is an on again off again sheriff who is relentless in getting the facts whether he is wearing the star or not. The supporting cast in Krueger's books are well developed and consistent from book to book. So far I have only read four of the Cork O'Conner books but I plan to read them all. They're great!
