Description

From neuroscientist and bestselling author Lisa Genova comes a story of resilience in the face of a devastating diagnosis. After a car crash leaves a vibrant mother in her thirties with a traumatic brain disorder called “left neglect,” she learns what truly matters most in life.

Sarah Nickerson, like any other working mom, is busy trying to have it all. One morning while racing to work and distracted by her cell phone, she looks away from the road for one second too long. In that blink of an eye, all the rapidly moving parts of her over-scheduled life come to a screeching halt. After a brain injury steals her awareness of everything on her left side, Sarah must retrain her mind to perceive the world as a whole. In so doing, she also learns how to pay attention to the people and parts of her life that matter most.

In this powerful and poignant New York Times bestseller, Lisa Genova explores what can happen when we are forced to change our perception of everything around us. Left Neglected is an unforgettable story about finding abundance in the most difficult of circumstances, learning to pay attention to the details, and nourishing what truly matters.

I am so touched to accidentally find this book. Left Neglected is such an interesting syndrome. I was touched by the family's closeness and stubbornness to make it through each day

I couldn't stop thinking about Sarah, the young mom with the hectic life schedule. She reminded me so much of my own daughters who also lead extremely busy lives, with difficult schedules, world travel and impossible demands. I felt my own stress level rise as I worried about these young parents and there were times when I had to walk away and calm down because I could envision and feel the levels of pressure she felt. That is how well it is written! I felt I was living through what Sarah was. I could feel her every emotion, frustration, disappointment. I had never heard of left neglect and found the information about it terribly valuable and sad. I felt her struggle to regain her dignity and independence as a result of the terrible brain injury from the accident. this is the second book I've read by Lisa Genova and I believe she is writing about topics that need to be discussed . Her Book" Still Alice" was equally compelling and informative, again written from a first person perspective on a major health issue,Alzimers. I'll look forward to another.

This riveting story was intriguing. I felt Sarah's pain, doubts, and fears over her life and recovery. A real page turner with an emotional connection. An excellent read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. I appreciated the author addressing this topic for I have a 28-year old son with Left Neglect and he is also blind. It has taken us a very long time to understand all the problems he has with Left Neglect because most patients who have it are not blind as well. This book helped me as we were learning at the same time with our son. It addressed so many important issues and I was thoroughly caught up in it. It was a wonderful book I have raved about to all my friends.

A wonderful read for those who are reevaluating what is truly important and trying to simplify their lives. Also a good portrait of how challenging it is to live with a brain injury. I truly enjoyed this book.

Excellent read! I mostly read it in one sitting. The only thing that Lisa didn't explain is that with left neglect, even if you turn your head to see the left part, is it still blinded? Or can you turn your head? That part was vague. All I know is the right hemisphere of the brain ignores what u see. I loved the first person aspect to the novel and the practical life of the protagonist Sarah. Also, her reunion with her mom was touching. A complete, through novel, well worth a topic that needs light and our attention. Thank you Lisa for this awesome book!

I read the authors other book Still Alice first. This book pales in comparison. It was not a bad read but I found it predictable and a bit sappy. I am not sure if I had read this first, I would have purchased the second.

I had a hard time putting this book down! Sarah (the main character), pulls you in and invites you to laugh, cry, and grow, as she does, throughout her recovery process. I miss these characters already!

This book was just what the doctor ordered for me. I picked it up without reading the cover jacket or knowing the subject. Within the first 50 pages I understood why I was drawn to it. You see, my 39 year old husband suffered a traumatic brain injury last year. The parallels in this book to our life, in this recovery phase, were amazing. I truly expected to read that the author had also suffered a TBI. So little is known about these injuries and recovery, it's easy to lose hope. This book, it's accurate narrative, it's warm, loving story, helped provide insight into what my husband and thousands of others face. It helped me have more empathy and compassion. In addition, it reminded me of the necessity of humor when facing life's challenges. A great read, I finished it in 3 days.

As a Speech Pathologist, I see this condition frequently and it was fascinating to read this book from the patient's perspective. I recommend this book and the author's earlier book entitled "Still Alice." I love that her books are novels, but are based on real life experiences. She makes you think about things you my not have even considered before. Can't wait to see what topic her next book will cover!
