Description
A team of award-winning sports reporters takes down the Great Satan of college sports: the Bowl Championship Series.
Every college sport picks its champion by a postseason tournament, except for one: Division I-A football. Instead of a tournament, fans are subjected to the Bowl Championship Series, an arcane mix of polling and mathematical rankings that results in just two teams playing for the championship. It is, without a doubt, the most hated institution in all of sports. A recent Sports Illustrated poll found that more than 90 percent of sports fans oppose the BCS, yet this system has remained in place for more than a decade. Built upon top-notch investigative reporting, Death to the BCS at last reveals the truth about this monstrous entity and offers a simple solution for fixing it.
Death to the BCS includes findings from interviews with power players, as well as research into federal tax records, Congressional testimony, and private contracts, revealing:
?The truth behind the "Cartel"-the anonymous suits who run the BCS and who profit handsomely by protecting it
?The flawed math and corruption that determine which teams participate in the national championship
?How the system hurts competition by perpetuating "cupcake" schedules
?How "mid-major" teams are systematically denied a chance to play for the championship
?How a comprehensive sixteen-team playoff plan can solve the problem while enhancing profitability
The first book to lay out the unseemly inner workings of the BCS in full detail, Death to the BCS is a rousing manifesto for bringing fairness back to one of our most beloved sports.
Reviews
Time for a 16 team playoffs
5By IMZ23Great book and most, if not all the arguments against the BCS system valid. It's about time for a 16 team playoff format and to bring March Madness to college football.End of Days
5By GdCAOne would think that the stench of the BCS would have driven reasonable people to revolution. Thus far, guess not. To paraphrase, the easiest way for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing....I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!?
5By D-Bo419Im buying this book today. I'm giving it 5 stars now bkuz I ALREADY know it will be great.. But about five comments down, drbuc, it sounds like u like the book. But u only gave it one star?Exceptional!
5By Brettsky1202A very well-written, and very well-researched, take on college football. A must-have for any college football fan!Wow!
5By jambo mambo kambo lamboFantastic college football book! Must read!FANtastic Book
4By Former Texas Football PlayerA must read for fans, players, coaches, and politicians. Most of us "in the business" have known about this for years. The fundamental problem with the proposed 16 game playoff is that it doesn't involve the major bowls. If 16 of the top teams are in the playoff, what Pac 10 and Big 10 teams are going to play in the Rose Bowl on Jan 1? The game and parade day isn't going to change under any scenario. And if the Rose Bowl doesn't go along, any playoff plan is DOA.Great job exposing the corruption of the BCS...
5By kerrsinpaIt is truly amazing that this kind of blatant corruption can exist in such a high profile place like college football. Its all here, the coverups, the manipulated computer rankings, the payoffs, the smokescreens, even the fleecing of the athletic departments and the US taxpayers. This book exposes the BCS for what it is...a pitiful band of unethical, uneducated and corrupt fat cats. These so called "bowl directors" should be ashamed of themselves. How do these university presidents not see what is going on here! The solution in this book is the ONLY solution. It's beauty lies in it's simplicity. Mr. Obama...GET THIS DONE!Sunlight is the best disinfectant
1By DrbucThis book was great because it exposed the sleazy back room dealings that is the BCS. College football has been hijacked by three-piece suited thugs that profess one thing and deliver another. Fans, students, and players get shafted. The thugs get rich, filthy rich. And they just don't care.Great book
5By BPhilbExcellent read for any college football fans. It changed my entire view if college football and the leaders of the BCS system.Must read for any NCAA football fan
5By 25Awall25Must read for any NCAA football fan.Shows the BCS for what it really is
5By KillPriestA corrupt organization that keeps a hold of it's power over the college football postseason through deceit, charades, and misinformation. If you are a proponent of a playoff system in college football (especially if you aren't), read this book.
