Description

An Apple Books Classic edition.

Herman Melville’s classic begins with one of the most famous opening lines in world literature: “Call me Ishmael.” Moby Dick was a commercial failure when it was first published in 1851, but during the 20th century, the book’s reputation grew and grew.

The novel features a memorable cast of characters, in particular the ivory-legged Captain Ahab, who lost a limb to the gargantuan white whale named Moby Dick. Now, Ahab’s sole obsession is hunting down the sea creature to exact his revenge. Heedless of warnings, Ahab risks ship and crew in his maniacal pursuit, bearing out Melville’s observation that ”there is no folly of the beast of the earth which is not infinitely outdone by the madness of men.”

Story could have been told in 300 pages or less. Author continuously rambles on and on. Characters talking to themselves for pages, not to mention all the mind numbing history of every character, ship, whale and even the crotch for the harpoon has a brief chapter. The categories and all species of whales along with the total anatomy of whales and the uses of the various whale body parts. Leviathan, monomaniac and pious are some words repeatedly over used. Boring

Impenetrable and devoid of pleasure. Good first sentence. Each subsequent line is worse. Don’t go down with this ship.

I downloaded this and it starts at chapter 1. The forward and introductory material—written by Melville, an essential part of the book—are missing.

At age 80, I can admit that I should have read this classic 65 years ago. No excuse, but trying to make amends for the folly of youth. Joe

…..don’t recall reading it in school so glad I read it now. Some of the vocabulary and obtuse references may be over students heads. Well researched in many ancillary topics and superbly written. It belongs high on the pantheon of the worlds best books.

I really truly do not understand why this book is held up the way it is. I had to force myself to finish it just so I could say I read it. It must be one of those things were is either love it or hate it. I found it boring and uninteresting. It was hard to keep up with at times.

Melville is so verbose that it seems to me he was paid by word. Not that great of a book.

The reading is hard at times due to the differences in how we talk nowadays. It has some slow chapters when explaining the whales, how the ship works, and some characters. The best part is picturing what the main characters look like and what they are doing. So glad I took the time to read this classic book.

It’s really good and takes me more than an half an hour to read, opposed to the 80 page long children’s version
