Description

A rich, passionate, multilayered portrayal of family strength and endurance from bestselling author Sara Donati

In the spring of 1824, in the remote village of Paradise on the New York frontier, Nathaniel and Elizabeth Bonner celebrate a glorious reunion as their children return from far-off places: Lily and her husband from Italy, and Martha Kirby, the Bonners’ ward, from Manhattan. In the peace that follows a devastating flood, childhood friends Martha and Daniel, Lily’s twin brother, suddenly begin to see each other in a new light. But their growing bond is threatened when Martha’s estranged mother arrives back in Paradise. Jemima Southern is a dangerous schemer who has destroyed more than one family, and her anger touches everyone, as do her secrets. Has Jemima come to claim her daughter—or does she have other, darker motives? Whatever transpires, Martha, Daniel, and all the Bonners must stand united against the threats to both heart and home.

I fell in love with this series. Didn't think I could find anything that compared to Dianna Gabaldon's historical fiction. "Sara" had perfect description of Louisiana during the war of 1812 and I can't wait to find more authors like her. Enjoy, mrslpn

This last book in the series made me cry. I love series that let me get close to the characters and keep letting me in. This last book brought everyone home in some way. There was closure but also the thread of a family continuing on. I will miss them

This is the last book in Donati's Wilderness series. It is not as good as the first one (which I would give 5 stars for sure) because there is a lot less action than the previous books but I still enjoyed reading it because it is written well and I was so absorbed in the previous books that I had to know what happens to all my favorite characters. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who liked Gabaldon's Outlander series because they have the best of everything: history, romance, adventure, and strong female characters that you can respect. Ive heard some say this series is somewhat "preachy" when it comes to racial issues, but I wouldn't agree. Race is a recurring theme throughout these novels, but if you think about how profoundly it must have impacted people's lives in that time period it doesnt seem like the author could have downplayed the issue more without being offensive or "disneyfying" the story too much. The only problem I have now is that I'm in the same predicament I was in when I first started this series after reading all of Outlander: what to read next?! This is one of those series that makes it hard to get into the next book you start because you're still in love with those characters you will be leaving behind. Ugh... Just thinking about trying to find my next read is getting me down. BUY ALL OF THESE BOOKS!!!
