Horace Greeley (1811-1872) , a native of Amherst, New Hampshire , grew up the son of a poor farmer.  His life reads like the quintessential American success story:  from his humble beginnings he moved to New York City at age 20, eventually founding the New York Tribune and becoming the presidential candidate of the Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 election.
