Description

Anthem is a dystopian fiction novella by Ayn Rand, written in 1937 and first published in 1938 in England. It takes place at some unspecified future date when mankind has entered another dark age characterized by irrationality, collectivism, and socialistic thinking and economics. Technological advancement is now carefully planned (when it is allowed to occur at all) and the concept of individuality has been eliminated.

The first time reading this book was in my high school English class. I remember enjoying the story and it was one of the many books that made me realize my interest for dystopian novels. Picking this book back up after a few years, I still have some of the same feelings about it. The beginning was quite confusing and it took until about the third chapter to fully grasp my attention. The story is about the main character basically developing a sense of individuality. He becomes aware of his feelings, looks, speech, and of other’s feelings. Although, I do have a different perspective about the ending now. Reading other reviews, I can see where the author took an egotistical approach without actually trying. The main character came off as thinking himself as better than others, in a way. Granted, the life he lived before was a form of slavery, but his tactic to gather his fellow brothers became cult-like. It’s easy to persuade them because they’re already in the same mindset to be freed from their dystopian life. Some would look further and have a political view about all of this, but it still didn’t bother me as much. It didn’t change my view that this is still a great read. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book a second time. I caught on to things and have different perspectives about certain aspects now that my mind has expanded more intellectually from my high school days.

The overall book was a great read, with a great plot line depicting a dystopian utopia, something that very well could occur in our world too. The only thing I did not find particularly intriguing was the end, which seemed to contradict the rest of the story. Only my opinion, just something to think about. Overall a nice read by Rand.

It reminds me so much of “We” but with a unique flourish and style. It is a cautionary tale of the result of unbridled socialism. However, the protagonist seems to be heading toward another extreme-of narcissistic individualism.

Eye opening, and more relevant today than ever before. This book is a required read in my opinion, for anyone searching for actual knowledge in life, rather than the hogwash rhetoric that is being forcefed to them by the majority of the publications produced in today’s desensitized society.

A little bit predictable, but a good read none the less.

This distorted view of a not so perfect society really makes you ponder what is truly important. Although I don’t entirely agree with Ayn Rand’s conclusions, it was a good, quick read. Her ideas align more with an eastern mind or Hindu way of thinking.

Rand self inserts and opines endlessly for the kind of fantastical island of a human she could never be.

“We sat still and we held our breath. For our face and our body were beautiful. Our face was not like the faces of our brothers, for we felt no pity when looking upon it. Our body was not like the bodies of our brothers, for our limbs were straight and thin and hard and strong. And we thought that we could trust this being who looked upon us from the stream, and that we had nothing to fear from this being.” This story was breathtaking. In a dystopian society where mankind is only allowed to think of themselves as “we,” one man discovers the power of “I.” A journey of self discovery and what it means to be human. A must read for anyone.

In the days where we are constantly bombarded with “the we is more important than the me” this is a great reminder of the little freedoms that are slowly stolen in the name of the Greater Good.
