Black Beauty
By Anna Sewell
- Release Date: 1950-01-01
- Genre: Animal Fiction for Kids
Description
An Apple Books Classic edition.
With Black Beauty, author Anna Sewell hoped to make people care about the cruel abuses that cab horses were suffering—bought and sold, whipped, and worked to exhaustion. Sewell tells the story from the perspective of Beauty, a horse who lived an idyllic life on a farm in the English countryside until he was sold and forced to pull cabs in London. In this way, she invites us to empathize with her animal hero.
Black Beauty did, in fact, change hearts and minds. Shortly after its publication in 1877, it became illegal to use bearing reins, which were designed to hold a horse’s head at a painful, unnatural angle. Almost 150 years later, Sewell’s classic has become one of the best-selling books of all time.

5By Bonnie PrancerStarting with a charming read about this horse, this Black Beauty with great encouragement of his future. Like all horses of the time, he was worked hard and pushed to his limits until he was injured to needing months before returning to old conditions. The end was surprising. He returned to a place with lovely, care taking and wonderful family and a very peaceful life ahead.Hi
5By j'ai oublièI love this book. I’ve read it several times and I love it so much! Yes it is depressing at times but it gives you more insight on a an animals life and it tell us why it’s so important to treat animals with care, love and respect. I you don’t treat and take care of animals properly you could end up killing the animal by accident or you’ll die. I love this book. If only Anna (or Ann) Sewell was still alive today. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 Ps. I love putting hearts in rainbows but I am not gay so please don’t assume that my obsession with putting hearts in rainbow order means thatAMAZING 😉!
