Description

A young woman, Cytherea Graye, is forced by poverty to accept a post as lady's maid to the eccentric Miss Aldclyffe, the woman whom her father had loved but had been unable to marry. Cytherea loves a young architect, Edward Springrove, but Miss Adclyffe's machinations, the discovery that Edward is already engaged to a woman whom he does not love, and the urgent need to support a sick brother drive Cytherea to accept the hand of Aeneas Manston, Miss Adclyffe's illegitimate son, whose first wife is believed to have perished in a fire; however, their marriage is almost immediately nullified when it emerges that his first wife had left the inn before it caught fire.

Thomas Hardy is definitely my favorite writer. And reading his books (on my iPhone!) against the juxtaposition of my modern life is thrilling. Desperate Remedies is a mystery. in true Thomas Hardy style, he covers and on and covers the emotional foibles of this overarching importance of respectability in life. Contrasting this importance of yesterday to our lives today is wild to contemplate. This book has everything. A beautiful young heroine, plucky hero, an engrossing tale... The mystery is the gravy. Enjoy!

I have read more than half of Thomas Hardy's books and have always found them worthwhile. He is right up there with my favorite authors. Even so I was surprised with all the plot twists and unexpected turns in the book. One of those books where you wake up in the middle of the night wondering about the plot. Also it was one of the books you cant wait to find out the ending, and then you are disappointed that it is over. So I would like to getmore into some of the details yet I am opposed to revealing plot until everyone has read the whole book. Let me just state I was really creeped out with the older Cytheria's relationship with the younger Cytheria. Beautiful how younger Cytheria could completely forgive the old wench!
