Description
The Great God Pan is a novella written by Arthur Machen. On publication it was widely denounced by the press as degenerate and horrific because of its decadent style and sexual content, although it has since garnered a reputation as a classic of horror. Machen's story was only one of many at the time to focus on Pan as a useful symbol for the power of nature and paganism.
Reviews
Excellently creepy novella
5By SnakinAkywalkerA good 100-ish page story told in a way that I think works remarkably well in the horror genre. Not a particularly difficult read, and with a lot less of what I think to be the weaknesses of Lovecraft’s works. It’s clear why Lovecraft himself was a fan, and Machen’s work is one of the first that I found I genuinely had a hard time putting it down.Phantasmagoric story
5By Bentwater NeighborVery well written. I seldom read this type of literature yet I must admit I read it in one sitting. The writer did an extraordinary job of keeping the reader’s interest all the way to the end. Excellent story.Wow. Strange and well executed.
5By PaayleIt’s obvious why this story is so highly recommended. A work that transitions the genre of horror from gothic to weird fiction. Definitely leaves you with an overall creepy feeling to dwells within your thoughts well after you have read the last page.Beats Dracula
5By Oliver TinsleOkay, so you need to read this in one sitting, with the lights off, and no distractions. If you do, I promise it will make sense, and you'll get sucked in the way I think Machen wanted readers to.Classic
