The moon is missing from the remote Village of Clear Sky, but only a young boy named Rendi seems to notice! Rendi has run away from home and is now working as a chore boy at the village inn. He can't help but notice the village's peculiar inhabitants and their problems.

But one day, a mysterious lady arrives at the Inn with the gift of storytelling, and slowly transforms the villagers and Rendi himself. As she tells more stories and the days pass in the Village of Clear Sky, Rendi begins to realize that perhaps it is his own story that holds the answers to all those questions.

Grace Lin has again given us a fascinating story of myth and character, illustrated with moving yet delightfully stylized line drawings and colorful pictures. Lots of imagination at work here, fine story-telling as a writer and indeed there is here story-telling as a narrative tool as well. Seen mostly from the point of view of an angry young boy, the book takes unexpected twists. A mountain disappears and the moon goes with it, overreaching and greedy people upset balances and petty feuds need resolution. Many balls in the air, and Grace Lin manages them all deftly. There is nothing superfluous here, and yet the reader is given a lush tapestry of details, smells and flavors. What a fun book to read aloud to 8 years and up.
