Carmilla starts out pretty strong, the first roughly two thirds of the book set up a lot of intriguing little questions and I enjoyed reading about the development of the narrator and the titular Carmilla’s relationship. The last six or so chapters seem to just kind of brush most of that off to the side before what feels like a both a padded out and rushed ending.

I love this story. Especially knowing that it came way before Dracula did, it has such depth. Very pleasant to read.

I loved the pacing as well as the dialogue between the two women. I also love the genuine mixed emotions Laura feels when she thinks of Carmilla. It is a great read and I very much recommend it.

This was the inspiration to Dracula no doubt and it shows. I liked the focused version through one character and predictable ending albeit well told.

I loved this story. There are sublime passages of vivid description emotion. There’s a subtlety and delicacy of language that draws the reader in. One of the best vampire stories that I have ever read.
  • A great read to follow up Dracula

I recently read Dracula and have been looking for another novel to scratch the same itch. Even though Carmilla was published 30 years before Dracula I read it as a follow up and enjoyed it thoroughly. Carmilla is paced faster and is much shorter than Dracula but also has none of the skippable moments I found throughout Dracula. Would definitely recommend to fans of the gothic Dracula novel genre.

I learned about this gem after reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and seeing a profile about Stoker and influences of vampires. I dare to say this was superior to Stoker’s Dracula. Bravo!
