Description

Written by a stockbroker and stock trader with over 35 years experience and geared towards both new and experienced investors alike, this book covers the many order types available such as ‘Market and Limit Orders’, ‘Fill or Kill’, ‘Stop Limit’, 'Immediate or Cancel’ and many more. Other subject areas include how to read and interpret basic and expanded quotes, the After-Hours Market, Short Selling, Margin Trading, Stock Splits and more.

A worthwhile read even for non-stock traders, the book also provides interesting factual information such as:

Why do we call them stocks? (It’s related to stockade.)

What was the purpose of the wall that gave Wall Street its name?'

Why did the New York Stock Exchange trade in 1/8’s of a dollar for over 200 years only ending the practice at the dawn of the 21st Century?

Why are they called Bull and Bear Markets?

What does Nasdaq actually stand for?

What do the statues above the entrance of the New York Stock Exchange represent?

The book also provides historical pictures of the New York Financial District as well as an interesting video showing how the paper currency of the United States has changed over the years.

I remember this gentleman from many years ago when he used to be interviewed on the financial networks and I always thought that he made more sense than just about anyone else. I'm glad to see that he is back and now writing books. This book is fantastic. Mr. Thompson can explain in one paragraph what most people need an entire page to do. The book is worth many times its price.

I've been a stock investor for over 15 years and bought this on the recommendation of a friend. I agree with the previous reviewer, 'Wow'. This book has finally filled in the gaps in my knowledge. Mr. Thompson has an obvious huge depth of knowledge and experience and has a knack for explaining things in a concise, easy to understand way. It's good to finally read the knowledge being put forth by one of the actual Wall Street Trader's instead of these guys on TV and radio who seem to be more entertainers than anything else. I also found the historical pictures and the video showing how the paper money of the United States has changed over the years to be particularly interesting and worth the price of the book in itself. I highly recommend this and hope to hear more from this author in the future.

Wow! It's about time someone created a simple, easy to understand tutorial for stock trading basics. A great read for anyone just getting started in investing and becoming familiar with the terminology. Well written and concise.

This is an outstanding primer for those who would like a solid understanding of how the stock market works, how shares are traded, and the terminology used in the industry. The author provides examples throughout and even supplements the text with historical background, photos and videos. The language is clear and easy to read, and Mr. Thompson does an outstanding job of explaining stock trading to both the novice as well as the experienced investor.
