Widely considered the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages, Geoffrey Chaucer is best known for the enduring ‘The Canterbury Tales’, which ranks as one of the most important works of the English language. It is a collection of 24 tales, presented as a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims, as they travel from London to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket. Chaucer's works helped establish the legitimacy of Middle English, at a time when the dominant literary languages in England were French and Latin. He has been called the father of English literature, who also gained fame as a philosopher and astronomer, while performing the duties of an accomplished courtier, diplomat, and civil servant.
