Dreadful, more like a first draft than a finished novel.
  • Great book, sloppy editing

Large chunks of text are repeated over and over, as if the book were edited by Nicholson's character from The Shining. Apparently no one bothered to read through this before they started peddling it to customers.
  • An amazing story!

I've loved LA Confidential ever since seeing it in theaters, and have watched it at least 3-4 more times. I decided to read the novel on a lark, and boy I'm glad I did! It only adds to what you know from the film. Several side stories and one biggie that were omitted from the film, as well as a few changes in story. But totally understandable considering how big this novel is, and would have been a booger to try to condense to screenplay size (props to Helgeland for that!). And major props to Ellroy for taking me back to Los Angeles in the 50's. Really an amazing job well done! This is the first novel I've read of his, and I'm going for White Jazz next, simply based on great reviews!!

Whoever produced this e-book needs a smack upside their head, Bud White style. Pages and pages are reproduced one after another. Check the 1956-57 calendar sections. Additionally, there are many typographical errors. Get another version. LA Confidential is a great story, but this version is a mess.
