Description

The same archeological team who uncovered a secret underground bunker on Dakistee sixteen years earlier, when the planet was still named Mawcett, has discovered a new facility. They struggle for months to open the entrance, but the structure defies all their efforts. Finally admitting defeat, they send a message to Admiral Jenetta Carver, beseeching her to come help once again.

In Region Two, Admiral Jenetta Carver is besieged with mundane work. Although she would love to drop everything and head for Dakistee, she can't possibly get away. But she also can't ignore the possibilities of what treasures, or dangers, the facility might represent. Fortunately, the battleship Hephaestus is in port, and the ship's third watch commander is available for a special assignment.

Christa is far from thrilled with the prospect of giving up her seat on the bridge, even temporarily, but when an admiral says go, you go. It doesn't matter that the admiral is your sister. Christa expects to make a quick trip, with a speedy return to the Hephaestus, but as with Jenetta, assignments often tend to take unexpected side trips into unique and dangerous situations.

This book was a good break from the main story. The crisis and challenges don’t always have to be bigger and broader. The story line in this book was well written and didn’t have to be galaxy wide to capture your attention. Bigger and grander doesn’t always mean better.
  • A very fun, compelling series!

Pleasure is the only way to describe reading DePrima's consistent driving of the Carver character(s) to victory. Their overcoming of obstacles seems trite only at first, very quickly I found myself cheering them on. The handling of multiple alien races fleshes out the character slate nicely and keeps the reader wondering where in the end DePrima is taking us. Missing only is the inevitable need to balance military with civilian authority - anyone think Christa? Keep up the great work and hurry I am waiting to see how we deal with the new Nordakisns!

Highly recommend this entire series as well as this particular book. TJD did a nice job of making all these books function well as individual standalone stories as well as integrating them into the overall series. You can comfortably start with any book and not feel like you are missing out on anything. What I like is that the characters have very well-defined moral values without them becoming too much of a straight jacket to the characters development. Naturally the suspense and action is great also. Overall this book is very refreshing for the sci-fi genre.
