The Battle of Gettysburg has been written about at length and thoroughly dissected in terms of strategic importance, but never before has a book taken readers so close to the experience of the individual soldier.
Two-time Lincoln Prize winner Allen C. Guelzo shows us the face, the sights and the sounds of nineteenth-century combat: the stone walls and gunpowder clouds of Pickett’s Charge; the reason that the Army of Northern Virginia could be smelled before it could be seen; the march of thousands of men from the banks of the Rappahannock in Virginia to the Pennsylvania hills. What emerges is a previously untold story of army life in the Civil War: from the personal politics roiling the Union and Confederate officer ranks, to the peculiar character of artillery units. Through such scrutiny, one of history’s epic battles is given extraordinarily vivid new life.

Excellent read
5By Aldo BenderA very detailed yet thoroughly engrossing read that once you get into it, is hard to put down. Highly recommended...Awesomely thorough
5By Fred WackerleGuelso’s deep depiction of the Gettysburg battles, filled with precise revelations of failed leadership decision-making, coupled with man’s reluctance to go for the jugular sets the tone for a great, albeit lengthy, read of this American tragedy. But, the disruption of the war led to emancipation for all...and the cementing of our democratic ethos. A wonderful book.Better then good
5By postaloneI've read a lot of books on Gettysburgh, but found this one to be well above the others, been to the battle field a few times and after reading this book I've come to understand it so much more.Gettysburg, The Last Invasion, Allen Guelzo, PhD
5By wsvjjvIt took days for me to read and reread many sections of this riveting history. I purchased several Gettysburg and other area maps to follow in great detail the travel and battles of the war. Hours have been enjoyed searching Wikipedia for more information about the officers, men and Gettysburg residents, Gettysburg President Janet Riggs and her college family must be very proud of their esteemed faculty member author Doctor Allen Guelzo.Gettysburg

1By MeadefanHistory is a reflection of source and interpretation of source. This volume has very strange, even absurd, interpretation.
