Description

Now a New York Times bestselling author, Nadia Bolz-Weber takes no prisoners as she reclaims the term "pastrix"(pronounced "pas-triks," a term used by some Christians who refuse to recognize female pastors) in her messy, beautiful, prayer-and-profanity laden narrative about an unconventional life of faith.

Heavily tattooed and loud-mouthed, Nadia, a former stand-up comic, sure as hell didn't consider herself to be religious leader material—until the day she ended up leading a friend's funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club. Surrounded by fellow alcoholics, depressives, and cynics, she realized: These were her people. Maybe she was meant to be their pastor.

Using life stories—from living in a hopeful-but-haggard commune of slackers and her unusual but undeniable spiritual calling to her experiences pastoring people from all walks of life—and poignant honesty, Nadia portrays a woman who is both deeply faithful and deeply flawed, giving hope to the rest of us along the way.

Wildly entertaining and deeply resonant, this is the book for people who hunger for a bit of hope that doesn't come from vapid consumerism; for women who talk too loud and guys who love chick flicks; and for the gay person who loves Jesus and won't be shunned by the church. In short, this book is for every misfit suspicious of institutionalized religion but who is still seeking transcendence and mystery.

Being a pastor myself I found my self having been in similar situations. It was very real feelings of a pastor in the midst of what we call life. Very enjoyable. I will continue to use a number if her "quick prayers" IE: Lord help me not be an a*#+=|e . Ver enjoyable read for all!

I wasn't expecting this, and I'm so glad I picked it up! Nadia's willingness to be vulnerable and incredibly human with her audience grants so much power to her writing. I feel like a better person for having read this work. Thank you Nadia! Maggie Mayfield Denver, CO

Wow, what love provoking words and scenario's. I,too, was also saddened that it had an ending! I know this is something I will read again and again to keep me in good focus and reminded. Nadia, you are amazing! Thank you for listening, following, having the guts to keep on keeping on and mostly for sharing! Life changing and thought redirecting. Maria DeFeo
  • Compassionate Christianity Apparently Exists

Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber is my kind of spiritual leader. Absent the tattoos and her courage to stand before crowds and speak the truth, she and I have much (too much?) in common. As my own darkness has led me to find light, she has written the first Christian book I have been able to stomach. I thought only the Buddhists believed in the sort of Grace described here, but the door of finding a compassionate and inclusive Christianity has just been nudged ajar.

I had the pleasure of hearing Nadia Bolz-Weber speak at The Wild Goose Festival this year. (Awesome…check it out) I loved her! I picked up a pre-release copy of this book there. She is everything you could ask for in the face of the new Christianity. She is real, she is honest and has "the past" to back up the fact there is hope for all of us. She tells us her story and reminds us again and again that God has a sense of humor. He also chose to share it with her. This is a quick read because you won't want to put it down. I really wanted to read it with a highlighter in hand but my hubby wanted to read it after me! If you have questioned "where do I fit?" or "do I fit at all?", pick up a copy of this book. You won't regret it.
