During the American Civil War, the Abolitionist Movement peaked and gained followers who believed wholeheartedly in the cause. With Lincoln's 1853 Emancipation Proclamation and the December 1865 passing of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, slavery was officially abolished in America.
