  • Beautiful book …. Terrible edition

I’ve read this book before and have loved it for decades. Haunting, poetic, it’s a masterpiece. Do yourself a favor, though, and don’t buy this digital edition. It’s riddled with typos and weird line breaks. I went with the cheapest edition and I regret it.

It’s a shame that I really disliked this book as Bradbury is so well regarded. But the fact of the matter is, this was difficult for me to read. I found myself having to set up a daily page quota just to get it done, a tactic commonly applied to reading in my school days. Bradbury went for style over substance here, trying to entice readers with beautiful poem style literature without expanding on the plot or the characters. This resulted in a story that was extremely hard to follow due to the nature of the writing and an emotional payoff that simply isn’t worth the effort to read through. The story itself could have been a quick Halloween read, meaning it had potential, but the execution in my opinion was boring and downright annoying. Maybe it’s because this book was made for a different time, with a different audience in mind, but as opposed to aging like fine wine, this book has aged like milk. In essence, this is the kind of book that your middle school teacher would assign to read over the summer, and middle school teachers notoriously assign boring, hard to follow, books.
