Description

An engrossing, “completely fascinating” (Cosmopolitan) memoir revealing the author’s struggle to come to terms with her own sociopathy and shed light on the often maligned and misunderstood mental disorder.

Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other people did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

In college, Patric finally confirmed what she’d long suspected. She was a sociopath. But even though it was the very first personality disorder identified—well over 200 years ago—sociopathy had been neglected by mental health professionals for decades. She was told there was no treatment, no hope for a normal life. But when Patric reconnects with an old flame, she gets a glimpse of a future beyond her diagnosis. If she’s capable of love, it must mean that she isn’t a like the madmen and evil villains in pop culture. With the help of her sweetheart (and some curious characters she meets along the way) she embarks on a mission to prove that the millions of Americans who share her diagnosis aren’t all monsters either.

This is the inspiring story of Patric’s journey to unlock the true nature of sociopathy and build a life of love and hope against all odds.

A fascinating read. Riveting personal stories with doses of psychological theory, research, & critique throughout. Opened my mind to something I never even considered.

What an incredibly rare lens, we get to look through in the pages of this book. I’ll admit the idea of sociopathy, psychopathy, and borderline, DID… Etc.., All of those are extremely interesting to me. I want to know why…? What motivates someone? Who holds the door for the person behind them, tips the waiter at least 25%, or the average amount. These honest and beautiful book is the most unique window into a diagnosis-but more importantly, a human being who experiences emotions, the symptoms of such a diagnosis and our brave enough to come forward and provide a case study on a mental health level that has been written off, vilified and twisted by media and pop culture. With this author’s story, I would hope that have the means and contacts to impact change, would take a serious look at this beautiful book. written by a humorous, albeit dry, wit other woman who has a unique and and beautiful framework so many in the mental health industry should have a copy of Sociopath: a memoir by Patric Gagne.

As a sociopath, I loved this book. I can relate. I just don’t feel empathy. I feel like a rag doll being controlled by other people, so sometimes I have to hurt other people. So I could feel in control. This is a good book.

I loved this! It was so well written and interesting. I have always been curious about the lack of support and resources for people who have behavior disorders, and been curious about what it's like. I am sure this book is going to help many people to better understand each other or themselves.

good intro into learning about where sociopaths lie on the mental health spectrum and what kind of emotions and actions they struggle to contain. her personal story leading up to becoming a sociopath therapist was interesting and inspiring. however, i feel like explaining her diagnosis in situations and stories she went thru became a bit repetitive. it was a great deal about her significant other.

This is an amazing book! I’m not a sociopath. However, I was able to relate in many ways. I was diagnosed with PTSD and there are days when I don’t feel anything.

Interesting insight into situation I had no idea what it really is. Of course, we all have preconceived ideas, but this book is a revelation on what it is.

Like most people whenever I heard the word sociopath I imagined serial killers like Ted Bundy. I never knew that sociopaths are on a spectrum but it makes sense now that I’ve read this book. I loved reading about Patric life and how she took the steps to understand her disorder and how she wants to help people like her. Please give this book a read! you won’t regret it.

Reading this book opened my eyes for people I never knew existed and their psychological struggles. It is sad and shameful that I have been around for so long and just now learnt the meaning of the word sociopath. But I hope that moving on I would carry the knowledge with me, be observant and compassionate.
  • I absolutely loved this book from start to finish

This is one of the best books I have ever read! It gave me such insight into sociopathy. It helped me understand and process what sociopaths go through. It also helped me feel empathy and compassion for them, and to learn to accept instead of villainize them. As an empath, it helped me to see just like I have an overwhelming amount of empathy, sociopaths lack empathy. Neither personality is right or wrong. It just is. Rather, it is how we act on those feelings or lack of feelings that make the difference. But, we all long to be accepted.

Amazing! First book on sociopathy that truly made it easier to understand. I’ve always been confused with sociopathy compared to psychopathy and she really killed it! 👍🏽
