Description

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER and ONE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES’S NOTABLE BOOKS OF THE YEAR

A NEW YORK TIMES "BEST THRILLER" and "BEST CRIME NOVEL" OF THE YEAR

PEOPLE MAGAZINE’S #1 BOOK OF THE YEAR

“Extraordinary . . . Reminds me of Donna Tartt’s 1992 debut, The Secret History . . . I was so thoroughly submerged in a rich fictional world, that for hours I barely came up for air.” —Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air, NPR

“This expertly paced thriller …has the kineticism of a well-crafted miniseries.” —The New Yorker

When a teenager vanishes from her Adirondack summer camp, two worlds collide

Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.

As someone who’s on deployment rn this my genuine opinion on the book. Most people reviewed this book with a lot of negative reviews saying that it was too many characters, a lot of holes in the story, that the book overall was not that good. I thought this book was amazing. I enjoyed reading the POVs of the different characters. I enjoyed being able to getting to know the characters and their stories. The mystery, suspense, and cliffhangers had me glued to the book. Literally had to force myself to go to sleep. Overall loved the book, it was amazing to read when I had no connection on the boat!

As a person who frequents a lake in the Adirondacks, I could see this sort of thing happening right then and there - it’s an eclectic group of neighbors…. Just the right amount of mystery! A fascinating close to home read!
  • Exciting but a little confusing

You’re hearing from so many point of views and the time is jumping around so much and so many characters but still super entertaining and well written.

Overall longer than it needed to be. It starts off slow, if you have the time this, it has a great ending.
  • Suspense and drama

I can usually figure out mysteries but this one had me stumped. Beautifully written and the clash between classes is a relevant theme in today’s world. I could not put it down

I feel like most things were pretty predictable throughout the book. I also feel like too much useless detail was included just not necessary to the actual plot of the story.
  • Page turner!

Daunting book at first because of the word count, however, I could NOT put it down. Characters were complex and intertwined so seamlessly. I loved it, must read!
