Description

In Beijing, Thuong Chi Dao, a twenty-two-year-old graduate student, moves to a new place alone, struggling with her two large suitcases. She hears a girl talking on the phone about a room with poor soundproofing and feels a sense of sympathy for the people suffering in the city. She submits her applications to companies in Beijing, but finds the room sketchy and unfit for her. She writes down her needs and worries about money, which she has saved up for. She feels brave but realizes her courage will disappear by midnight. She tries to resist the urge to urinate, but the fear and cowardice fight against her. The first night as a new guest alone in a different place is long. Thuong Chi Dao, a young woman from Guizhou, moves to Beijing and meets Ton Vu, a young man who lives in an old, cramped building. They share a raincoat and head to the farmers market, where they buy various items. Ton Vu, who is from Harbin, is impressed by Thuong Chi Dao's beauty and cleanliness. They also meet a friend, Ton Vu, who helps them makeover their room. Thuong Chi Dao is twenty-five and works at a company, which takes about eighty minutes to get there. She is excited about her future and is looking forward to her life and work in Beijing. At night, she feels lonely and homesick, missing school and friends. She tries to write a page in her notebook before going to bed, but the sound of rain outside the window makes her feel like she is back in the South.
