Description

Dashing counterspy Alex Hawke must rescue a kidnapped American scientist as the United States and China move dangerously close to all-out nuclear war in this adrenaline-fueled thriller in the New York Times bestselling series that combines the hallmarks of Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy, Ian Fleming, and Daniel Silva.

When an elderly professor at Cambridge is murdered, a victim of bizarre, ancient Chinese torture, Alex Hawke teams up with his Scotland Yard colleague and friend Inspector Ambrose Congreve to find the killer. But the death is only the opening move in a tense and lethal game of geopolitical brinksmanship.

In the United States the president has begun behaving strangely. Is his mental health deteriorating—or is there something far more sinister behind his questionable moves? The answer is crucial, for tensions are mounting between China, North Korea, and the U.S. And China has launched fighter jets and a mega submarine vastly more sophisticated than any seen before—military technology that leapfrogs anything the U.S. and Great Britain possess.

With the situation edging toward an unthinkable abyss, Hawke must pull off his most daring mission yet: infiltrate the China and neutralize the source of their advantage . . . or risk witnessing World War III.

Reviews

  • A poor parody of previous books in the series

I could only get through a third of this book before giving up. I loved all the previous Hawke novels so I’m not sure what happened. The writing is incredibly overdone to the point of being comic- but not in a good way.

A great read and a great ride. I've loved them all and hope for many more.

This is junk. The storyline is totally unbelievable with superhero feats that are made to seem everyday and commonplace for these miraculous characters. Each character is so cliche and predictable. The vernacular for each ridiculously stereotyped character is silly and embarrassing. The African American. The Hispanic. The 007-esque Brit saying "cheerio" and "tally ho." Couldn't even finish this garbage. AND.. the shameless plugs for Fox News and critical editorials about climate change. This is brainless immature simpleton garbage. Not worth 1 penny. .

I love Ted Bell, and Alex Hawke. This was the worst book by Bell. Very little action, in a word "boring." Very very disappointing. If you're smart PASS.

Superb and suspenseful! This is very exciting to read. Some parts of the book really made me think about the best ways to protect the U.S.

Absolute garbage. Another victim of the deadline, Ted? Your books were very good until this pile of rubbish. If I could give it less than a single star, I surely would.

Gripping storyline from the outset. Hawke, Stoke (First Knight) and Ambrose did not disappoint. Really liked Ted dedicating several chapters to Ambrose pursuit of the murderers of his friend Dr Wanatabe and Sabrina. The backdrop of China was very interesting. Finally, the use of the Raven as an assassination/killer was a nice twist. A little Hitchcock. Enjoyable. Can not wait for the next Lord Hawke adventure.

This is one of Bell's best. Tons of action, well written, and a page turner for sure.
