Samuel Rutherford's Letters — written principally during his exile to Aberdeen (1636–1638) and the years that followed — were published posthumously in 1664 and have been continuously in print since. They are among the most-quoted devotional works in the Reformed tradition. C. H. Spurgeon called them 'the nearest thing to inspiration which can be found in all the writings of mere men.'
