Vol. 11: Over the course of their journey to the West, San Zang's three disciples have time and again shown personal qualities that make them worthy of their master. But Sun Wu Kong, Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing have been known to cause an awful lot of trouble. Now, the four companions must atone for vulgar bit of mischief by taking part in a seemingly endless competition of wits, and anything less than victory would mean losing more than just the contest. The latest creature to hear about the group is the Alligator Demon of the Black River. He is the nephew of the King of the West Sea who recently ransacked the palace of the river's king and claimed it for his own. He disguises himself as a boatman who will help San Zang and his disciple cross the river. When he gets halfway down the river with San Zang and Zhu Bajie in his boat, the demon makes his identity known and kidnaps them, taking them to his palace deep in the water.
Vol. 12: When San Zang and his disciples come to an impassable river, they take shelter in a small village, which has been ruthlessly tormented by the Ling Gan Demon, a vicious underwater creature who demands sacrifices of the most horrifying nature. The Ling Gan Demon first appeared in the village during the great drought decades earlier and brought much needed rain to the village. Afterwards, the village began to worship the demon, thinking it was a Taoist deity. The following spring, the demon brought so much rain it caused a flood that inundated the village. The villagers fled to the peak of a mountain, where the demon appeared and told them their village would only survive if they made a horrific annual offering to him: the sacrifice of one of the village's young children.
Vo. 13: Since his journey to the West began, San Zang has relied on the strength and wits of his disciples to overcome adversaries and escape certain death. Now, the four travelers must cross the Women's Kingdom, where the greatest threat isn't a monster or a dragon, but the forbidden desires of the human heart. The four companions cross a river by hiring a boatwoman to take them across. They have entered the lands of the Women's Kingdom, a place where men have not set foot in centuries. San Zang leads his three disciples into the Women's Kingdom. Hearing the commotion, the queen's guards approach the crowd and intervene. When San Zang tells them who he is, it is clear they have heard of him, and they escort the four companions to a guest house.
Vol. 14: San Zang has known from the beginning of the journey to the West that Sun Wu Kong's short temper and violent tendencies could be as great a threat to their mission as any monster or demon. Sun Wu Kong stands alone in the middle of a great void, speaking to disembodied menace who watches over him and plays mind game on him. The stone monkey demands answers, but the menace vanishes, and soon Wu Kong is staring down the heavenly army of the Jade Emperor, the same army he defeated centuries before. He invites attack, then annihilates something truly unexpected and frightening: another Sun Wu Kong. He attacks the impostor, but is startled to discover that the other Sun Wu Kong is just as powerful as he is.
Vol. 15: San Zang has recently welcomed Sun Wu Kong back into the company of his traveling companions, and they are diligently making their way towards the West when they notice the weather becoming hotter and hotter. This is strange, since summer is several months past them. When the four can go no farther, Sun Wu Kong is dispatched to find shelter. He comes to a village and asks the help of an old man who explains to them that they are near the treacherous and impassible Mount Flame, a mountain engulfed in fires so powerful that trying to pass would be the same as committing suicide.
