Description
The world Cal and Frida have always known is gone, and they've left the crumbling city of Los Angeles far behind them. They now live in a shack in the wilderness, working side-by-side to make their days tolerable in the face of hardship and isolation. Mourning a past they can't reclaim, they seek solace in each other. But the tentative existence they've built for themselves is thrown into doubt when Frida finds out she's pregnant.
Terrified of the unknown and unsure of their ability to raise a child alone, Cal and Frida set out for the nearest settlement, a guarded and paranoid community with dark secrets. These people can offer them security, but Cal and Frida soon realize this community poses dangers of its own. In this unfamiliar world, where everything and everyone can be perceived as a threat, the couple must quickly decide whom to trust.
A gripping and provocative debut novel by a stunning new talent, California imagines a frighteningly realistic near future, in which clashes between mankind's dark nature and deep-seated resilience force us to question how far we will go to protect the ones we love.
"In her arresting debut novel, Edan Lepucki conjures a lush, intricate, deeply disturbing vision of the future, then masterfully exploits its dramatic possibilities."-Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad
Reviews
Has little to offer
2By koreanhistorianI just finished reading California, which I bought a couple of years ago because Stephen Colbert told me to. I began it then quite eagerly but gave up a quarter of the way through due to extreme boringness. Blaming my stupidity and lack of patience, however, I recently gave it another try. Lepucki is a fine writer who offers many worthy examples of phrasing and description, but this book severely lacks imagination. From quite early on I kept asking myself, “Where is this story going?” — a question I would keep asking until Chapter 20 or 21 (out of 24). Wait, the end of Chapter 19, was that the climax? What the hell! While I thought the sections about the Pirates and Micah’s viciousness had potential, most of the dark secrets in the story were a snooze and did little to make me question my humanity. Had Lepucki never heard of The Walking Dead when she wrote this? Anyway, for a book that is marketed as “post-apocalyptic dystopian fiction”, California proves to have very little to offer the genre.Pretty good
4By MattFarrell89California was overall a good read. During some parts the book can get a little boring and monotonous. Easy read though and great for her first novel. If you're looking for a post apocalyptic book, this probably isn't going to be what you think it would be but good nonetheless.Neat lil dystopian novella
4By Blue-appleInteresting concepts and psychology in this dystopian future novel. It's told from both sides of a young couple perspectives and it's intriguing how their perceptions are different from one another in the very small reality they share. I liked how vague the author was about the year, and about the state of world at large around them. Everything is important to them that's right at hand, mostly survival. This was a nice, entertaining, easy read.Terrible
1By turg2323I'd like to write a more thoughtful review but I already regret wasting time reading this novel.A Good Approach
4By MustBeTheDustLepucki’s story is a very interesting, experimental approach at the post-apocolyptic genre. Her storyline is a very well thought out story. I enjoyed how she implemented the terrorist element into her story. All in all the book has its flaws, like all do; but what made this book unique is her idea of a post-apocolyptic world. I have never seen a more realistic, almost lifelike approach to the apocolyptic genre. This book was good and could be made better if Lepucki wrote a different book with a similar approach.Great book. Mediocre ending.
4By ...adhIt seems as though the plot (which is gripping throughout) just runs out of steam at the end. Regardless, the writing's great, and the characters are unique and relatable.California
3By DrMichiganTension runs throughout the book, and that kept me turning pages. However, I just felt unsatisfied when it was all over. No real twists or turns that could have added intrigue or mystery. Nothing to really figure out. Book is well written and relationships and characters well-established, but to me the plot was lacking.California
4By jayebirdsflyeyeEasy read. Interesting subject matter. Everyone is thinking about the "what if". Like to see a sequel.Great read!
5By DigitaIJediWhat a great book! Deep, rich characters, interesting story and an exciting plot twist. Would highly recommend this to a friend.Too deep for me
2By StaynavytomLord of the Flies revisited. Too weird for me. But I like Zane Grey so what do I know about literature?Engaging book
5By Stlunatic80Beautifully written; haunting, poetic character development; deeply tragic look at humanity; loved every word of it.Tired of this marketing ploy
1By Techlady4160Really tired of stories that could be told in one book drawn out into a series. The publishers should also tell you that this book is part of a series. Print is dead. Please stop trying to squeeze a few extra bucks from the few folks still using the medium.Good read but disappointing ending
2By KingDante1964I won't spoil the ending but let's say its a let down. Doesn't tie up the lose ends. Feels like she got tired of writing and just cut it off. Really annoying after spending so much time with it.Half way, it gets better.
3By sen4487Okay, I had to revise this review. Originally, I did not like this book, it took till half the book to pick up. It got better from then on. I still dislike the turkey baster thing, but overall the book was good. I gave it a second chance, and I read all the way through.California
