“The war is over. The Separatists have been defeated, and the Jedi rebellion has been foiled. We stand on the threshold of a new beginning.”—Emperor Palpatine

For a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights brought peace and order to the Galactic Republic, aided by their connection to the mystical energy field known as the Force. But they were betrayed—and the entire galaxy has paid the price. It is the Age of the Empire.

Now Emperor Palpatine, once chancellor of the Republic and secretly a Sith follower of the dark side of the Force, has brought his own peace and order to the galaxy: peace through brutal repression, and order through increasing control of his subjects’ lives.

But even as the Emperor tightens his iron grip, others have begun to question his means and motives. And still others, whose lives were destroyed by Palpatine’s machinations, lay scattered about the galaxy like unexploded bombs, waiting to go off. . . .
Reviews
- Phenomenal novel by a phenomenal writer5By TigersJC86I read this when it first came out but because I hadn’t caught up with Rebels it didn’t have much impact on me. Reading it now after having seen Rebels (I personally think it’s the best animated show Star Wars has done) I can hear the voices and understand the characters and JJM nailed it. The story was fantastic and has a terrifying villain, we see Sloan (and will again) and got to see the team up of Kanan and Hera who are the best characters from Rebels. I only wish we had gotten more Rebels novels (and more Star Wars novels by JJM).
- Nowhere near as good as Rebels1By BrkthomDoes not come close to the depth and maturity of storytelling in Rebels. This book serves one purpose. It gives you a peek into the meeting of Kanan and Hera. The rest of the story lacks heart and believability.
- 3 1/2 stars3By Eddyed26I’d rate this book more a 3 1/2. As a rebels fan, I really enjoyed seeing kanan and Hera again. I also was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the other characters such as okadiah, skelly, and especially Zaluna! I found the story pretty interesting and was invested in the adventure. I’d rate higher if the writing was a bit better. Sometimes the writing felt choppy or a bit awkward. I would’ve like to see more time with kanan and Hera interacting together. I still feel like I haven’t gotten to know them as much as I’d like too. Especially hera which is somewhat understandable bc kanan is more the main character but still it felt like hera didn’t have much of a personality. Still thought she was a total BA but I wanted to see more from her. I also felt somewhat bored when I’d read the chapters that surrounded sloane and Vivian. (Expect for the one chapter where my jaw literally hit the floor [I won’t spoil ;)]) Overall not a bad read and will probs read through again. Definitely could be improved in some areas but if you’re a rebels fan it’s worth it.
- Kanan5By PantsRMGreat read, gave an origin of Rebels!
- A new dawn of boredom1By FivenightsAF_gamingThis book was incredibly boring the thing was just crappy and boring the only action was at the end other wise just a boring book
- Wonderful read5By Neophyte RedglareI’ve always wondered how The two leaders of the rebels crew came to know each other and this novel explains it in an action packed and exciting way

- A New Dawn of Hope for Fans4By ErtrovI was among the many fans disappointed to find out that the Expanded Universe was ending, declared non-canon, and rebranded “Legends” by Lucasfilm/Disney. However, I was hopeful that it would truly mean what was being promised: a new, cohesive canon, where the films, shows, games, books, and comics all intertwine and reference one another. And that promise came true. We now have a Clone Wars character in Rogue One, Thrawn in Rebels and his own upcoming novel, Rae Sloane in multiple novels and the comics… It’s a better time than ever to be a Star Wars fan, and it all starts here, with A New Dawn, the first canon novel. The novel itself is a great read. John Jackson Miller, who I already loved for his KotOR comics and Knight Errant, does these characters justice in a way that’s especially impressive considering Rebels hadn’t yet begun when he wrote this book. It has adventure, heart, and sets up characters who have become incredibly important and beloved.
- A Wonderfully Told Story5By James_ForresterThis book does a magnificent job of describing the meeting of Kanan and Hera. It's filled with Drama, comedy, and awesome twists. I recommend this book to anyone who likes Star Wars: Rebels.
- New Dawn2By Superbrose 10I am not a fan of the book "A New Dawn." In fact, I essentially forced myself to read this book out of respect for Star Wars information. Two-thirds of the book are incredibly boring with little action. In fact, anyone wanting just the action can skip to the last 7 chapters and be fine for understanding the information.
- Was not expecting that kind of a ride!5By Manuel Lee PereiraThis was a fantastic, engaging, and well written book! Personally, I'm not a big reader; however, I found myself wanting more and more while reading. Not wanting to stop! (Purchased it yesterday) My only reason for purchasing Star Wars: A New Dawn was that it serves as a canonical prelude to the T.V. show Star Wars: Rebels. This desire began after some exchange in dialogue while watching the episode "Legacy". Like the title, I was not expecting that kind of a ride! Highly satisfied with my decision on purchasing and reading this book!
- Best book yet5By Crazy hat ladyThis book was great.
- Lots of fun.5By JackB MoIf you're a fan of the series you will love this book. If you haven't seen the series this is an excellent introduction. All in all a great read.
- A New Dawn for the new Star Wars continuity5By Wil224I approached this book with caution. I love the old EU. The good and even the bad. So when it was rebooted I was understandably worried. I can definitely say that I shouldn't have been. This book not only perfectly sets up the rebels TV show (which is awesome by the way) but also stands as a great standalone novel. I don't want to get anything away about this book but it shows how Kanan and Hera meet as well as the state of the galaxy at the time and why it took so long for a rebel alliance to be formed in the first place. The story opens up the Star Wars universe for brand new characters as well as new stories that finally show the Galaxy far, far away is not as small as it seemed to be.
- Who knew I would love a prequel to an animated series?4By Charizard4PrezThe first novel in the relaunch of Star Wars fiction, A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller, is a refreshing and exciting adventure that is sure to put a smile on the faces of fans old and new. It has a lot to offer, but of greatest importance is that it is a full-length adult novel featuring all-new characters (rather than relying on Luke, Leia, Han, and the like). The truth about the current state of the Star Wars universe is that countless adults are watching and enjoying Disney XD’s animated series, Rebels. A New Dawn is a terrific backstory for our new Rebels that adds the depth of character that adult fans crave. It helps the reader understand the injustices of the Empire, the courage that is needed to spark a rebellion, and the danger in being a forgotten Jedi in the period between the trilogies. All the while, Miller gives us grin-worthy callbacks to the movies we love and perfectly captures the feel of A New Hope. I’ll recommend this one to anyone who enjoys a plot full of camaraderie, cantina brawls, TIE fighters, hiding from Stormtroopers, and most of all for anyone who enjoys Rebels. It’s not the best Star Wars book on the market, but it’s a strong start for the new novels in this new era. To have a well-written adult novel absent of any film characters (other than flashback appearances of the Jedi of old) is risky, but is in this case a success. A New Dawn is wonderfully different from any Star Wars book out there. Try to read it without wanting to pull out your lightsaber to fight the Empire, I dare you.
- Good book4By Bob TheBaconatorI enjoyed the book alot, having read almost all if the Star Wars universe I would say it was on par. However i only gave it four stars because i did notice alot of grammatical errors.
- Great read!5By McjtorresThis book was excellent. In honesty this was the book I was least interested in reading in the new continuity, but after reading it I was more than pleasantly surprised. The story plays out well, the characters are interesting, and it feels like Star Wars. For the person complaining about how the author called ships repulsor lifts, that does not in fact happen. He used the term to describe the ships functionality. Excellent read.
- Kicking off the new canon3By JLMessA very strong start that dwindles throughout the book. Rather than building to a climax, the story starts string and became more boring to me as it continued. I did enjoy the characters and the fact that we have a Star Wars book without a single lightsaber ignition. The book works great as an introduction into the Rebels cartoon series and adds some depth to the stories of Kanan and Hera. I would like to see more stories like this, but with perhaps more engaging storylines.
- Pardon the small rant1By darthsassacreI'm a poor person, so I can only get the sample for now. But oh, wait! It's not working! Why would this thing ever work?
