Dull, repetitious treatment of an important topic. Mostly a summary of court transcripts.
Thoughtfully Told

As an assault survivor I appreciated the author's thoughtful, thorough research and care for this subject matter. It is a delicate topic that I think he takes on with great care. Informative read for anyone interested in a system that continues to fail victims of assault and rape.
Outstanding and relevant

Using Missoula as a small window into a larger cultural issue, Krakauer does a thorough and thoughtful job looking into how rape is looked at in America and how much more difficult we make it for victims of sexual assault. Not an easy read but a very valuable one.
Same story, over and over

I'm a fan of Jon K, but this one is a dud. It's the same story, over and over again, without a point, or a solution, or even a hint of emotion. Pick any chapter, read it, and you have the whole book.
A Must Read

I was really hoping to find something interesting about this book . I am tired of Jon Krakeuer and his tendency to not get to the point in story.
Great Read

I was looking forward to reading the author's treatment of a very important subject, but ended up very disappointed by a long-winded text containing lots of repetition and extended adaptations from court transcripts. Not unsurprisingly his position on the subject was clear from the beginning, which further added to the repetitious nature of the text.
Better than I expected

"Missoula" misrepresents the town and citizens of Missoula, Montana.

It is my opinion that the author unfairly used the town of Missoula to attack the criminal justice system prevalent throughout America in general, and in sexual assault and rape cases in particular. It seems he tried to justify preconceived conclusions concerning the judicial system by painting the entire city of Missoula with a black paint brush.
However, he does present critical problems with the system, especially regarding sexual assault and rape but saying the government's attempt to tackle these issues by assuming all victims are truthful, I.e., all alleged perpetrators are guilty, is the opposite of what we are led to believe is the exact opposite in our justice system.
Excellent!

I'm a huge fan of Jon Krakauer and, as a result, read everything he publishes. Once again, he nails this horrific topic concerning rape committed by an acquaintance known to the victim. Using events that transpired at the University of Montana, Krakauer takes on the University system, the police and the prosecutors and the ways in which victims must succumb to intense scrutiny of not only the legal system but also the community in which they live. It's an eye opening read to the ways in which our culture minimizes the effects on victims of reporting rape and its consequences. I highly recommend it.
