Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Gillian Flynn’s Edgar Award-winning homage to the classic ghost story, published for the first time as a standalone.

A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan’s terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan’s teenage stepson, doesn’t help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.

“The Grownup,” which originally appeared as “What Do You Do?” in George R. R. Martin’s Rogues anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the world’s most original and skilled voices in fiction.

It feels like I read half of a book for $6.99 you have to give a little more. I will not be looking for the sequel cause I feel like I’ve been gagged!
  • Too short

The length of this book barely qualifies as a short story!. Very disappointed.
  • Unremarkable

So predictable. Characters are cliche to the point of being boring. So much unnecessary set up and then a sloppily quick storyline.
  • Very intriguing until until it stopped short. Kind of fun for the imagination though.

This book is the usual dark, clever story you’ve learned to expect from Gillian Flynn. I thoroughly enjoyed it until the end. The problem is that you suffer from whiplash by the sudden stop. While I’d love for the story to continue… part Ii perhaps? I wonder if Ms. Flynn is challenging our imaginations as to how this plays out. I’m certainly going to think on it…

So, firstly, I made the mistake of assuming this was a full on novel. The book is only 80 pages long. I was really looking forward to this story because I love everything else Gillian Flynn, but I was truly disappointed with this story. It started out fairly decent but the ending was atrocious.
  • Quick little read

Seems unfinished. Not at all like any of her other work.
  • If you like Flynn’s writing style you will enjoy this short story

I’ve noticed a lot of people were upset they didn’t realize this was a short story, though the page number is listed. If you enjoy Flynn’s writing style, you will appreciate this creative and brief story with dark undertones.

This is a book that I believe shows the art of storytelling. No pun intended.
  • Waste of $2.99

This book was a promising in the beginning but had a ridiculous abrupt end. Waste of time and money. I’d give it zero stars if I could.

This was a great suspenseful short story. The ending kind of left us on the edge of a cliff. Now to patiently wait for another piece from Flynn.
  • Yeah- really! And yeah - seriously!

People who give this book a bad review are the kind of people who need their stories spoon-fed to them and then tied up with a little bow. This is a short story that is both amusing and thought provoking. It doesn’t give you all the answers, but, hey, that’s life for ya!

Although the beginning of the book caught my attention on how she was giving hand-jobs the story went everywhere caught up with the wife's husband and a killing story weather the kid or the girl was right. Fast and easy to read, really enjoyed it.
  • Not her best at all.

I love Gillian Flynn but this felt rushed and trite. The protagonist tries to be clever far too often and it's distracting. The ending is also extremely lackluster and anticlimactic. It's not a bad plot but it's executed poorly. Overall I'm a bit peeved that I spent $3.
