Poison or Protect: A Delightfully Deadly Novella
By Gail Carriger
- Release Date: 2016-06-21
- Genre: Science Fiction
Description
A sexy assassin, a sexy Scottish spy, and two lobsters attend a Victorian house party.
New York Times bestselling comedy of manners author Gail Carriger brings you a charming story of love and espionage set in her popular Parasolverse.
ASSASSIN
Lady Preshea Villentia, the Mourning Star, has four dead husbands and a nasty reputation. Fortunately, she looks fabulous in black. What society doesn't know is that all her husbands were marked for death by Preshea's employer. And Preshea has one final assignment.
VERSUS SCOTSMAN
It was supposed to be easy, a house party with minimal bloodshed. Preshea hadn't anticipated Captain Gavin Ruthven – massive, Scottish, quietly irresistible, and… working for the enemy.
In a battle of wits, Preshea may risk her own heart – a terrifying prospect, as she never knew she had one.
"This intoxicatingly witty parody will appeal to a wide cross-section of romance, fantasy and steampunk fans." ~ Publishers Weekly, starred review (Soulless)
May contain plaid, gentlemen eating dainty tea sandwiches, and the strategic application of leather gloves. Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Outlander in this seductive story from the author of the Parasol Protectorate books. Perfect for fans of Ilona Andrews, Lindsay Buroker, or Diana Gabaldon.
From the author of the Finishing School series, featuring deadly ladies of quality, this story stands alone but you can find out what happened to the next generation in Reticence or read the next in the series Defy or defend.
Delicate Sensibilities?
Contains men pleasing women, and ladies who know what they want and ask for it, sometimes in detail. If you like that kind of thing, you'll also enjoy How to Marry a Werewolf.

Preshea vs Dimity
5By Quirky27The Delightfully Deadly series is my favorite of Carriger’s series. While Carriger’s writing style is always witty, the voice of her characters come through most clearly in this series. Preshea’s caution, calculation, and cynicism temper Poison Or Protect’s wit and humor; which creates a very different mood from Dimity’s sparkling and playful story in the second book of the series.Steamy fun!
5By gurukaramGail Carriger give us lots of steamy fun when an assassin/intelligencer trained in a famous floating finishing school meets a large Scotsman who only wants to please her.Another winner!
5By Empty EssMs. Carriger does it again. This is another rich mixture of the absurd, the comic and the suspenseful. The characters, despite their fantastical dimensions, hold our attention with their core humanity. Romance, without the bodice ripping, can remind the reader that the 'novel' began as a venue for exploring the emotional realm of life. Wry humor is a big part of surviving. Read this book. It's a joy.Love!
5By Airvamp12This short and sweet romance novella was my cup of tea. It has great characters that you will love. The romance in the book was very well written. A must read and be read stand alone without reading any of Gail's other book. Highly recommended to romance readers.Poison or Protect

5By SparrowSong22When I saw that this novella was going to be about Preshea, I’ll admit I was a little bit skeptical. I am happy to say that I was proven wrong. It was great to see another side to her character, and of course the story was as funny, surprising, and exciting as everything else I’ve read by Carriger!I loved it!
5By Goatgirl30I love Gail Carriger's books and I'm always excited to read her new ones. I expected nothing less of her. It was a really good book and I loved it!Deadly Delicious!
5By CassandraJGMs. Carriger has delivered to us another fantastic romp through her steampunk fantasy universe and I could not more pleased for a ride in her dirigible. Preshea is beautiful, complex, and tortured and her Scotsman - oh my. Just what the doctor ordered. Clear your evening, brew a pot of tea and nestle down with the first of what is sure to be a fantastic sojourn of novellas.Um Gail? When's the next one come out?
5By RawnaerisThis one doesn't require previous knowledge of the Parasolverse, so it's a good entry point. Presha was never a favorite character of mine, but this story brought her into a much more sympathetic light. It is a romance, the sex scenes are neither too long not too brief, imho, and balance well with the rest of the story.Tip-top romp
5By Murasaki9Following the villainess we love to hate--or at least critique--from the Finishing School series (not required reading to enjoy the this latest) Carriger takes us on an exciting jaunt through the English countryside. Vampires, werewolves, subterfuge, attractive Scotsmen, and tiny tea sandwiches, what more could one want? "Delightfully Deadly" way to spend an afternoon, can't wait for more of these little gems!
