Josef est un garçon juif vivant en Allemagne nazie, dans les années 1930. Alors que la menace des camps de concentration pèse sur les Juifs, sa famille et lui amorcent un périple en bateau qui les mènera à l'autre bout du monde…

Isabel est une jeune cubaine. En 1994, quand les émeutes et les violences prennent d'assaut son île, sa famille et elle montent à bord d'un radeau en direction des États-Unis, où ils espèrent trouver la sécurité…
