**THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**
"Alex Michaelides’s long-awaited next novel, 'The Maidens,' is finally here...the premise is enticing and the elements irresistible."
—The New York Times
"A deliciously dark, elegant, utterly compulsive read—with a twist that blew my mind. I loved this even more than I loved The Silent Patient and that's saying something!"
—Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author of The Guest List
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession, that further cements “Michaelides as a major player in the field” (Publishers Weekly).
Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike—particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens.
Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana’s niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge.
Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor target one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld?
When another body is found, Mariana’s obsession with proving Fosca’s guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. But Mariana is determined to stop this killer, even if it costs her everything—including her own life.

5By maynedmAnother well written story from this Author! I first read The Silent Patient and I’m glad it worked out in that order with the book’s references it was cool to know what he was referring to. I kept trying to figure out the ending and once again I was completely wrong! Couldn’t keep the book down. The Maidens
5By mariapcvGreat read. Unexpected ending.Great read!
5By WinnieandlucyAnother fantastic read! The Maidens is a Greek tragedy in a modern English context.
4By bxj3This story is a psychological mystery and a thriller that offers few clues throughout, but those that are included are intriguing. Even the armchair detective may be in for a surprise at the end. The characters are complex and their relationships are certainly worth exploring. There are no super heroes here; thinking is what matters in The Maidens.Ok but like second album slump
2By Bodhiboy65This story is not as compelling as his first novel, The Silent Patient. It is seriously contrived and perhaps worse still, implausible and pretentious.Lead on mystery
3By Funu12I didn't like the how the killler turned out to be…It seemed rushed, but the idea is novel.Bummed.
2By m-wingHis previous book, The Silent Patient, consumed my life when I read it for the first time. The twist was amazing, I didn’t see it coming. I have to say, that the callouts, and that both these books exist in the same universe made me feel like I knew a secret. I also enjoyed the Greek influences grounded in this story. But I read all 450 some pages, the twist started exciting but quickly was a letdown. I’m a little bummed that I lost $15 bucks for this book. I’ll still be interested to see if Alex puts out another book like the silent patient, but instead I’ll support my local library.Boring
1By Chris Fed UpI made it to page 96 and just can’t read anymore. The first book was pretty good but this one is awful.Boilerplate
3By Honest EarlsThis mystery had all the ingredients of a mystery story and as following a recipe, baked an average read. Boilerplate, routine, unexciting. More murdered young women. Yawn.A fantastic page turning read….
5By nnaaahhhh…. With an ending I didn’t see coming.At his best!!
5By eisenlourRiveting!! Unable to stop reading… amazing story…Jaw dropper!
5By A.A.NoahIf you enjoyed The Silent Patient, then you are in for a treat in this book!Absolutely love this author
5By lxmvrieAfter reading The Silent Patient, I decided to read The Maidens, and it did NOT disappoint. Michaelides is on track to becoming, if not already, one of the greatest authors within the psychological thrillers genre. Everything from world building to the relationship he crafts between the characters and the readers — there’s no way for you to see the ending coming. As soon as you thought you had it figured out, the entire story turns upside down. I really enjoy how immersive his books are and the level of psychological detail that is put into the characters. It is definitely worth the read and will leave you speechless.Interesting
3By No more WWIt’s a pretty quick read and a good story, but it’s a little too slick, too manipulative. The twist doesn’t make a lot of sense. I was surprised but there’s no way to see it coming. I like it better when you realize you’ve been seeing things from one perspective and failing to see the other one. Or any other one. This story feels a bit lazy. All of the things
5By KenzcaseThis book will have you feeling every emotion as you journey through every twist and epiphany that are scattered throughout. I love this author and I can’t wait for his next book. I highly recommend reading The Silent Patient afterwards or before for a fun surprise 😉Good read
