ROMANCE WRITERS OF AUSTRALIA RUBY WINNER (SPECULATIVE FICTION) 2022

Lyndal Suttone is done watching the merchants suffer. So when an opportunity to help them presents itself, she grabs hold of it with both hands. Now she must leave her family behind and step into a world she has no idea how to navigate. With her eyes fixed firmly on the prize, she is going to need someone to watch her back.

Astin Fletcher has resigned himself to a life he was never supposed to live. His only purpose is to keep the king alive, a job that is becoming increasingly hard. The merchants are rising, and so is Astin's pulse whenever Lyndal walks in the room. The middle Suttone sister has entered his territory, turning his purpose on its head. She has no idea what she is stepping into, and now it falls on him to safeguard her.

This is book two in the medieval dystopian series Kingdom of Walls. If you love angst, action, and sharp dialogue, then this high-emotion romance is for you.

I absolutely loved Lyndal and Astin's story. It is a thrilling and beautiful adventure. A beautiful continuation of the series which focuses on the middle Suttone sister. I really loved the character development seen throughout the story. I love the relationships that Tanya is able to create, not just between the main couple, but between the three sisters as well. This entire book kept me captivated and unable to put it down. There are so many exciting surprises littered throughout the book that keeps you on the edge of your seat

I absolutely love Tanya Birds novels and this one (of course) did not disappoint. This follows middle Suttone sister, Lyndal Suttone, as she is selected by the King to accompany her cousin to court. At court, we meet the queen mother who secretly plans to put Lyndal, not her cousin, at the king’s side. Caught in the mix is Astin Fletcher, the kings personal guard, and longtime admirer of Lyndal, who must fight his longtime time feelings for her as she is groomed to become the next Queen. This book has all the tropes I love in a novel; slow burn romance, forced proximity, and grey-area villains. The world building was perfect. The characters were four dimensional, so I was able to make an easy connection with them. The plot was well written and moved at a perfect pace. The writing was great as always. The setting was perfect for the story. I just have nothing negative to say about this story. I just loved everything about it. Overall, this was an easy 5 star read for me. Read it, that's all I have to say.
  • Wonderful Story!

I am a huge fan of Tanya Bird, having read every book she’s written. She is a writer who infuses romance, adventure and humor into her stories seamlessly. This the second book of the Kingdom of Walls series. I love how Tanya writes a series. Each book gives you a complete story, with an ending. Each installment is complete, but, along the way you will meet characters that are interesting and you will want to see them get their own story. No cliff hangers. Now this book has some gut-wrenching scenes that made me cry, but somehow Tanya works thru them with believable dialogue. She is a master! I always rate a book by many factors. One being “do I wish this book would never end? “. And, “do I think about this story and it’s characters when I have to put it down”?. Yes and Yes!

She has created incredible characters that are strong, resilient, funny and likable. She has created a world that you can immerse yourself in. I couldn’t put the book down. She’s written a beautiful love story that you will want to read again and again.

This book is the second book, but can read as a stand-alone and still have the same effect! Tanya has a way of creating worlds with so much imagery that it creates a realistic picture in the minds eye without going over board on the details. She writes about tragedy and love, loss and heartbreak, and includes sarcasm and wittiness to keep it lighthearted. When I tell you she has quickly become my favorite author ever, it’s not hard to see why! Do yourself a favor, read “Defender of Walls” and then prepare yourself for a late night bc you won’t want to stop and continue right onto this one! You will easily fall in love with EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER! I promise you! 5 stars just isn’t enough!
