Description
THE FANTASY BOOKTOK SENSATION!
For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a dark, lushly gothic fantasy about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom—but the monster in her head isn't the only threat lurking.
Elspeth needs a monster. The monster might be her.
Elspeth Spindle needs more than luck to stay safe in the eerie, mist-locked kingdom she calls home—she needs a monster. She calls him the Nightmare, an ancient, mercurial spirit trapped in her head. He protects her. He keeps her secrets.
But nothing comes for free, especially magic.
When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, her life takes a drastic turn. Thrust into a world of shadow and deception, she joins a dangerous quest to cure the kingdom of the dark magic infecting it. Except the highwayman just so happens to be the King’s own nephew, Captain of the Destriers…and guilty of high treason.
He and Elspeth have until Solstice to gather twelve Providence Cards—the keys to the cure. But as the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.
Reviews
Wonderful fantasy read
5By luna, titan, and skys momI didn’t have high expectations of this book but it was actually very good once you grasp the explanation of the cards in the first few chapters. Go ahead and get the second book also because it does end mid storyThe dark window
5By q928283Read it now !! Such a good book !Bland and basic
2By JenniebeeeeeeeePlain language romantasy. The magic was a little interesting and that kept me reading, but the rest was pretty boring. I started rolling my eyes every time I had read about how someone’s eyes went glassy. Like, learn a few more descriptive phrases, please.4.7 STARS

4By kitykity2006It was an interesting story and a fun adventure to go on. Characters are great and I enjoyed each characters emotion. The characters emotions really enhanced the story.Magic
5By love still existsThe story itself is beautifully crafted. Magic cards in my opinion aren’t that interesting, but the way the author uses them to create the story line, to build each character and their unique gifts, and how all the magic behind the cards tie the characters together on a quest truly has inspired me to believe in the magic that the author created. Each character in this story has an important role and adds depth to the unfolding of the story. Overall, I was very pleased with this book. I wish there were more parts, but two parts was sufficient so that the story wasn’t drawn out unnecessarily.Amazing
5By HillaryCancioStarted a little slow, but wow did it blow me away in the endNot for me
2By straeaThis book was so well-reviewed that I was expecting to love it, but in the end it wasn’t the book for me. The terrible rhyming poetry that starts each chapter was painful for me to read, but if I could have just skipped it after the first few chapters I would have kept reading; but I discovered that the terrible rhyming poetry is also integrated into the main text, and after several chapters of wincing every time I was forced to read it, I finally gave up. It wasn’t helped by an apparent major plot twist that seemed super-obvious to me based on the actual text (not even just hints) but which the main characters seemed to still be oblivious to at the point where I quit reading.
