LESSON 1 INTRODUCTION
Freud proposes in this series of conferences to give a series of snapshots of what psychoanalysis is to a lay public. Throughout this first talk he is outlining warnings about PSYCHOANALYSIS IS CONDEMNED TO BE HATED BY SOCIETY THANKS TO THE UNPLEASANT TRUTHS THAT IT REVEALS.
He begins by admitting to the audience that he assumes they know that PSYCHOANALYSIS IS A KIND OF TREATMENT FOR NEUROTICS. However he warns that he is a DIFFERENT TREATMENT. What is distinctive is that while in most medical treatments the therapist tries to instill in the patient an almost blind certainty about the success of the cure, THE PSYCHOANALYST MUST WARN THEIR PATIENT OF THE LACK OF GUARANTEES OF SUCCESS ASSURED AND OF THE DIFFICULTIES THAT SHOULD BE OVERCOME TO OBTAIN PROGRESS.
