Description

They call him many names, but Angelic isn't one of them . . .

Sebastian Ballister, the notorious Marquess of Dain, is big, bad, and dangerous to know. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the "Bane and Blight of the Ballisters"—and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. He's determined to continue doing what he does best—sin and sin again—and all that's going swimmingly, thank you . . . until the day a shop door opens and she walks in.

She's too intelligent to fall for the worst man in the world . . .

Jessica Trent is a determined young woman, and she's going to drag her imbecile brother off the road to ruin, no matter what it takes. If saving him—and with him, her family and future—means taking on the devil himself, she won't back down. The trouble is, the devil in question is so shockingly irresistible, and the person who needs the most saving is—herself!

I have read a lot of historical romances from Outlander series to Julia Quinn. This book has been my favorite for years. It’s well-written, clever, and satisfying. The lead characters are witty and the chemistry between them jumps off the page. I’ve reread this book several times and it never gets old.
  • I read it twice back to back!

i couldnt put the book down, and if i had to, i couldn’t wait to get back to it and pick up where i left off. i love the way the author played the characters against each other. the passion, the wit, the fierceness and the deep love that was underneath all of it. and the way the events unfolded kept you hooked and interested in finding out what happens next. highly suggest this one!

I plowed right through this book, not even the Thanksgiving festivities could make me take a break of more than a few hours without sneaking in a few pages (at least) When I think about it I can't even tell you how Dain makes his money and honestly... for once, I don't care! Normally I would be aggravated that such a huge detail was omitted but as I reasoned with myself, that fact was not missed because the story was truly enchanting 💘💖

Most of the novels written with a "feisty" heroine and a "proud" hero make me want to throw the book at something I equally dislike, after smacking the lead characters' heads together. Trite and tiresome THIS book is not. Dain and Jessica are intelligent people, but Dain is carrying a large boulder of hurt with him. Causes him to do, and think, truly stupid things. Jessica wants him, but she understands bargains and how to get them. She really wants to figure the puzzle that Dain is, set him straight if possible, and take her chances with Mr. Prickly Pants. What makes this tale one most readers cite as their favourite of hers is that setup, the tension between them, and the amazing and witty verbal battles. The two leads are also well-developed and complex, as they ought to be. It's a fun romp. While I read it when it was first published, I hadn't read it since, so I'd managed to forget the story, among the hundreds of books I've read since then. Thus, I have twice had the experience of reading it for the first time!

What an entertaining story of the patience and understanding love requires! Especially enjoyable was the quick wit and underlying sarcasm of Lord Dain and Lady Jessica as they discovered how, through trial and error, to overcome obstacles, past pain, and personal issues to finally trust and love each other. An excellent story line, well-written, grammatically correct, and without distracting typos and skipped words! Thoroughly enjoyable!

Loretta Chase at her finest. Finally a heroine who you like and want to be like - intelligent, witty, practical and steadfast. And Dain is such a delicious combination of brute strength and heartbreaking insecurities. I loved it!
