#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A cold case turns red-hot when a death-row inmate renews his acquaintance with Dr. Kay Scarpetta in this “utterly chilling [and] grisly, fast-paced thriller” (Entertainment Weekly).
“Engaging and horrifying . . . a book that fans will want to read for the sheer voyeuristic quality of watching the characters they know so well go beyond their limits.”—Houston Chronicle

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is settling into her new life as a private forensic consultant and is deep into a case that has left colleagues in Louisiana profoundly disturbed. A woman is found dead in a seedy hotel, dressed to go out, keys in her hand. Her history of blackouts, and her violent outbursts while under their spell, offer more questions than clues about the cause of her death.
Then Scarpetta receives news that chills her to the core: Jean-Baptiste Chandonne—the vicious and unrepentant Wolfman, who pursued her to her very doorstep—has asked to see her. From his cell on death row, he demands an audience with the legendary Dr. Scarpetta.
With friends and family by her side, Scarpetta tries to guess what sort of endgame this madman has in mind and how, if at all, it’s related to the Louisiana case. She begins to unravel a twisting, international conspiracy and then confronts the shock of her life: a blow that will force her to question the loyalty and trust of all she holds dear.

Hairy beast
3By sallielmI can’t continue reading her books until there is a continuation to tell what happened to the little boy and the hairy beast. I am in limbo.Twisted
5By Mud flatVery little foreseeable, hard to imagine how she cooked up the plot and characters.Blow Fly
5By kathywamsleyI have always enjoyed this author from the first book to this book. At times I have even reread a few of her books. Thanks kScientist’s Mystery
5By rokn-docThis book is filled with mystery and intrigue and is seen from the vantage point of a scientist (Scarpelli) who emphasized the minute detail of her investigation. It all makes logical sense and adds the advantage of speaking through a pathologist.Blow Fly
3By LindanellbugA little disappointed in some of the ranting was hard to keep strait so therefor a hard to follow. The ending is disappointing unless there is a sequel that lets the reader know the little boy is safe. Is thereScarpetta the Witch
3By Anne BeaverThe book is fair. If it was your intention to make everyone hate Scarpetta by the end of the second chapter, congratulations: you have succeeded mightily. My dislike for her has grown with each book, but within the first two chapters of this book you've managed to take that dislike to new heights. I only hope that you do not possess any of her "characteristics", except maybe her cooking abilities. Even though I do not like the main character and never have, I do enjoy most of the other characters most of the time and that is why I have continued to read this series. The one thing I do not understand is how the age gap between Lucy and Scarpetta keeps getting smaller and smaller. All of the discrepancies with the ages of the main characters are quite confusing and annoying. I realize you have every right to write them as you wish, but Scarpetta should be in her 70's with regards to the latest book.Great book!!!!
