Description

The first novel in #1 New York Times bestselling author Jan Karon’s beloved series set in America’s favorite small town: Mitford.

It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet, Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's sixty years old. Suddenly, Father Tim gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich comedy about ordinary people and their ordinary lives.

One of the most real novels I have read. Mitford could really exist.

I love the characters in this book. There is a wonderful variety among them. Many of them have very unusual quirks that kept me chuckling. The story spans a little over a year in the lives of the residents of Mitford. I thoroughly enjoyed the everyday life element. Most of it is just common occurrences. Then there will a be a notable event that takes place. The book just flows back and forth as time passes.

“At Home in Mitford” is Jan Karon’s first of the sweet Mitford series. I admit that I originally went in with a bias toward her writing, since the author and I hail from the same town, and I have spent many fun times visiting the area on which Mitford was modeled. But Karon truly does know how to craft a heartwarming story. Rarely have I cried while reading a work of fiction, but I found myself sobbing, as I read this book. Karon is skilled at seamlessly blending humor and faith into a captivating story about well-drawn. characters that you will care about deeply. Karon isn’t afraid to hit on heavy, unpleasant issues, but she balances it out, isn’t preachy - and thank GOD she isn’t political. She was one of my late mother’s favorite authors, and I am so glad that I decided to give her works a try, in my mom’s memory. Anyone who enjoys small town tales will enjoy her writing; in fact, this should be true of anyone who enjoys good writing, period.
