Description
The last novel Ernest Hemingway saw published, The Old Man and the Sea has proved itself to be one of the enduring works of American fiction. It is the story of an old Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal: a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Using the simple, powerful language of a fable, Hemingway takes the timeless themes of courage in the face of defeat and personal triumph won from loss and transforms them into a magnificent twentieth-century classic.

Twice read.
5By Rusty TuffputtsOnce when I was the boy’s age and just now as an older man. Powerful story that has been in the periphery of my mind for many years. Or was it the center of my subconscious? I often thought of it when perseverance was the order of the day. One life to live. Live it to the fullest and do what you were born to do.My All-time Favorite
5By I’m more boredI wrote for my school newspaper in high school and was in an advanced literature class in Mena Arkansas my sophomore year and this book was recommended to me by my teacher for a report. It became my favorite then and still is to this day. I read it a couple of times a year now that I’m into my 40s. I have so much respect for Hemingway and dream at times of sharing in his adventures. Highly recommend!Old Man and the Sea

5By rcgmiamiIt is clear why this book won the Pulitzer Prize. You feel the life you are reading about. You feel the pain, the sadness, and the strength of nature. Just as the "old man dreamed " we can dream of and work to become such descriptive narrators. If you want to read great writing this is it.The old man and the sea

1By surethanks7"An old man went fishing, and was pulled by a fish, but the fish was eaten by a shark when the man killed it" Overrated. An amazing piece of literature
5By 1125263993638373Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" is a wonderful tale about perseverance and self confidence and, is not only well written, but is an incredible adventure story. During the book, Santiago, the old man, encounters criticism from fellow fishermen, extremely bad luck, feats of strength and loneliness. There are many aspects of the story that states the point of never giving up. The book was a great read and quite interesting. It was suspenseful and also sad at some points, most especially the hardships that he faced. One of the great things about the book is that it shows the confidence and endurance of the old man in many ways, like how he is always hearing criticism from fellow fishermen or when he stays with the fish for more than 24 hours. Since it is so well written, the book can not be improved in any way. The people that would enjoy the book are people looking for a great short story of Hemingway's or an introduction to a great American author. Also, it is a story for anyone that wants a great adventure story. The book is very unique and is unlike any other book. In conclusion, the story is not so much of triumph, but more of mental and physical endurance. 5By johnny on the spotFor me, this is the best and also most accessible piece ever written by Hemmingway. His simple story of a simple man in simple prose - sounding like a translated manuscript - has been proven timeless. We are all Santiago in one form. If you read just one Hemmingway - make it El Viejo y El Mar.Simply Perfect
5By BiminiBudPerfectly SimpleVery Slow.
1By TheCro310The ending was no where near good enough to make up for the lack of action throughout. Too many non-English and expletive words. If there was a message I'm just simple, because I couldn't see it. Overall weak.
