With the war in Europe winding down in the spring of 1945, the United States turns its vast military resources toward a furious assault on the last great stepping-stone to Japan—the heavily fortified island of Okinawa. The three-month battle in the Pacific theater will feature some of the most vicious combat of the entire Second World War, as American troops confront an enemy that would rather be slaughtered than experience the shame of surrender. Meanwhile, stateside, a different kind of campaign is being waged in secret: the development of a weapon so powerful, not even the scientists who build it know just what they are about to unleash. Colonel Paul Tibbets, one of the finest bomber pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps, is selected to lead the mission to drop the horrific new weapon on a Japanese city. As President Harry S Truman mulls his options and Japanese physician Okiro Hamishita cares for patients at a clinic near Hiroshima, citizens on the home front await the day of reckoning that everyone knows is coming.

Treatment of the 27th Division was historically inaccurate and poorly researched.

A novel that puts you in the foxholes and hellish nightmare of war in the islands. A read you will long remember after your finished.

Shaara’s historical fiction is brilliant. I have read the majority of his work and am always enlightened and empowered to see history through the conscineces of those who participated shaping it. The Final Storm is an exhilarating read. The war in the Pacific is every bit as significant as the war in Europe during WW2. To read this book is, in some very limited ways, to be a part of the experience and helps one identifiy with the terror, complexity and pain that war causes. It also gives us illumination into the humanity of many of America’s greatest leaders.

Felt the fear, the revulsion and the unbelievable courage on every page. Great book, should be included in every high school history class about WWII

I have read all 4 books in the series and have learned more from these than all the history lessons and documentaries combined. Jeff gives great insight into the mind of the soldier as well as the commanders on both sides. This book, as does the rest of the series, goes well beyond names and dates and brings humanity to the battlefield.

The Final Storm was a thoughtful, insightful read. In keeping with his tradition of writing well researched historical fiction, Mr. Shasta has brought history to light through the lives of the characters who experienced it first hand.

Jeff sure knows how to write great historical fiction. The characters are so real. The terror they live in the pacific is striking. I couldn't put the book down and can't wait for the next one.
