Spring 1862. The Confederate Army in the West teeters on the brink of collapse. General Albert Sidney Johnston is forced to abandon the critical city of Nashville and rally his troops in defense of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. Hot on Johnston’s trail are two of the Union’s best generals: Ulysses Grant and Don Carlos Buell. If their combined forces can crush Johnston’s army and capture the railroad, the war in the West likely will be over. There’s just one problem: Johnston knows of the Union plans and is poised to launch an audacious surprise attack on Grant’s encampment—a small settlement in southwestern Tennessee anchored by a humble church named Shiloh.

Drawing on meticulous research, Jeff Shaara dramatizes the key decisions of the commanders on both sides of the conflict—and brings to life the junior officers, conscripts, and enlisted men who gave their all for the cause. With stunning immediacy, Shaara takes us inside the maelstrom of Shiloh as no novelist has before.

“Brilliant . . . riveting . . . a work to be embraced.”—Bookreporter

Includes a preview of Jeff Shaara’s next Civil War novel, A Chain of Thunder.

I got a hard copy of this one for Christmas and have already read it twice. I love how it talks about the little things like the fact that A.S. Johnson was concerned about one of his generals illness just before he was killed. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

In the finest tradition of the Shaara authors we are treated once again to a superb novel of the forging of our military and nation. As with all the Shaara works, this one is hard to put down.

Outside of the poor formatting and missing pages (almost enough to make me stop reading) the content was a far cry from the original series. A good beach read, particularly for a fan of history, but not up to the usual Shaara level.

I have somewhat corrected the problem of missing pages. Whenever that happens (which usually is at the end of each chapter), go back to library on your iPad and the reopen the book. That has solved the problem until the next chapter ending.

As the previous reviewer stated there are many missing pages and sentences in this book. There is also no support mechanism that I can find to report it or re-download the book. I would no recommend buying this book in its present state. This was the first book I purchased for my iPad. In the future I will stick to my kindle fire for books.
