Can we ever escape our secrets?
In the cobblestoned streets of Luxembourg, Kate Moore’s days are filled with playdates and coffee mornings, her weekends spent in Paris and skiing in the Alps. But Kate is also guarding a tremendous, life-defining secret—one that’s become so unbearable that it begins to unravel her newly established expat life. She suspects that another American couple are not who they claim to be; her husband is acting suspiciously; and as she travels around Europe, she finds herself looking over her shoulder, increasingly terrified that her own past is catching up with her. As Kate beings to dig, to uncover the secrets of the people around her, she finds herself buried in layers of deceit so thick they threaten her family, her marriage, and her life.
Hailed by The New York Times as “smartly executed [and] thoroughly captivating,” The Expats proves Chris Pavone to be a writer of tremendous talent.
Reviews
Until the Last Paragraph
5By K508Until the Last Paragraph I did not know the outcome. An excellent read.Chronology Issues
4By chasebaileyI enjoyed the read, but it was very hard for me to keep track of the chronology of the story. I had to go back many times and re-read chapters. I believe that the time line could have been better organized. Why does this guy have a career?
1By Bearly44One of the worst screenplays/books I think I've ever tried to read. The writing is so middle-grade dull and bad, the story so utterly stupid it just boggles the mind that this pos ever got published. If this is what readers find entertaining, then the rest of us who write good books should just give up because there’s no competing with peurile writing and storylines like this. It doesn’t even count as pure entertainment because of the preponderance of one-dimensional characters and the overabundance of cliches. Just…ugh. Long on bad sentences and just plain long.Pointless, boring and poorly structured
1By Anton BrechtCould have used an editor. I finished it just because I am compulsive but if you are really expecting something on lines of Le Carre you will be disappointed. The closest thing to spy raft here is the protagonist walking on a window ledge. The remaining 9/10th of the book is comprised of an extremely 1 dimensional character struggling to cope with being a housewife.Vastly Overrated
1By CrimsonNcreamThe attempt to create tension and/or suspense by telling the story in a non-linear fashion fell utterly flat. The main character was so inconsistently written, it was impossible to feel any connection to her. The secondary characters were completely two-dimensional- especially the husband, who never felt like part of the story at all. The plot, once it was no longer obscured by the convoluted set-up, is so laughably flimsy that I finally understood why the author was so reluctant to reveal it. Boring, lazy, very self-satisfied writing with an ending that was actually offensive.Hard to put down
4By InvestowizIntricate plot that is almost believable. Most interesting is the writing style of the author. I'm talking about his unique way of describing the thoughts of his main character.Obsessed
5By wellbyshoreI simply could not put my iPad down when reading this book. Instead of sleeping on a red-eye to Europe I was caught up in Kate and Dexter's adventures abroad. I hope Mr. Pavone has a new adventure for Kate in the works.Boring.....
2By Longhorn5555Poorly crafted... Jumps around... Lacks cohesiveness... Uninteresting... Page after page of descriptions of housework... Finally gave up 3/4ths through it, and I rarely put a book down. The worst
1By Cv2o12I was compelled to write a review to warn anyone who might purchase this book. If you are expecting a fast paced, spy thriller, that keeps you turning the pages, this is not the book for you!The Expats
5By Maui DudeI devoured this book in two days. So many clever twists and turns, and so delicately revealed. The best novel of its genre I've read, perhaps ever!Could not put this book down
5By courtigFascinating and intriguing. I was addicted from the first page to the last. I wish he had other books out there to read.Grabber!
5By MWO 2012More twists and turns that can be counted. What a wonderful story, terrifically written, with great character development. The jaunts throughout Europe were a bonus. Read this book. It is a grabber. Hard to put down.A truly delicious meal for the mind!
5By True KinsmanSuperb. This book is truly a delicious meal for the mind. The writer was able to jump between past & present in a smooth way without disturbing the flow of events. The set up is in Europe, about an American couple venturing into a new life & a new start. One of them is ex-CIA with dark hidden secrets. Add to that the small little detail of Cyber-theft and you have a winner! Every page you read will leave you hungry for more! The Expats
3By AdomegI really wanted to like this book. It provides an interesting glimpse into what life would be like as an expat in Europe. The subject matter and characters were interesting. But the non-linear storytelling was at times confusing and often frustrating. Why for example, must Kate's exit interview be broken up over several chapters, other than as an obvious (and inneffective) attempt to try to create the sensation of a thriller that can't be put down? The prose was rather awkward at times, as well.Rubbish
1By Expat GurlHaving visited, worked or lived in Luxembourg, Brussels, and Paris, I thought this would be a fun, quick read. Wrong! It was confusing, badly plotted, and poorly written. Wish I could get a refund!Love the twists
5By BeautifulCalamityGreat plot and multiple story lines. I couldn't put the book down!Expats
4By AdtakerVery intriguing. You had to follow carefully so as not to miss clues. It moved very carefully but I thought it was worth it. I'd give it 4 stars. The Expats
5By Plastic surgeryVery intriguing , with many twists and turns to keep you interested To the end.Expats
1By DecomgYou read and read expecting something exciting to happen and nothing ever does!
