We're digging up onions in the back pasture when Mrs. Hopewell sees that Bible salesmen headed toward the highway. "He was so simple," she says, and what I'm thinking is simple is what simple does. All the while I've got my eye on the barn, where I seen him and Hulga go a hour ago. She ain't come out, probably for the shame of it, and I'd say as I couldn't blame her none. There's things that ought not to be done in a barn, especially with a Bible salesman. But I never been one to be nosing about other folks' doings, so I don't offer a word about it to Mrs. Hopewell until she says, "I wonder where Joy has got to." Well, I'm not one to lie, especially to my boss lady. "I seen her and that Bible salesman headed into the barn about a hour ago," I say.
