Description

On a warm July morning in L.A. County, a frozen corpse turns up at a highway brake check just south of the Grapevine Pass. Ex-homicide detective Hunter Rayne, who now drives an eighteen wheeler, is persuaded by his irascible dispatcher, Elspeth Watson, to help clear two fellow truck drivers who are arrested for the murder. His job is made more difficult by the fact that the suspects, a newlywed couple, won't speak up in their own defense.

The circumstantial evidence is strong, and a rookie detective from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department is eager to score a win. The investigation crosses the Canada-U.S. border when the victim is identified as a second rate musician from Vancouver, and it turns out there were more than a few desperate people happy to see him dead, including the accused couple. Hunter has to use all his investigative skills to uncover the truth.

Hunter’s ex-wife maintains that by taking to the highway Hunter is running away from his past, but he believes that the solitude of days on the road is helping him to heal from guilt over the failure of his marriage and the suicide of his best friend. Tangled relationships and multiple suspects emerge throughout the novel, as Hunter butts heads with more than one officer of the law to solve the crime.

'Ice on the Grapevine' was selected by the judges as a finalist for the 2012 Global Ebook Award in the mystery category.

Truck driving mystery by a retired RCMP detective. I’m a fan of road trips so this west coast into Vancouver is intriguing to me. I lived in that area several years and took many of those northbound roads to escape the SoCal humanfest!

Loved it. Could not put it down. Suspense, love, real life characters with warts & beauty.

The author does an excellent job weaving a compelling drama which is hard to put down. As a reader I enjoyed the plot twists and character building. Perfect amount of description, enough to paint the picture but not so much detail that the I was bored. My only complaint is there was such excessive use of expletives. An occasional F-bomb to depict a characters’s personality is one thing but it starts to be annoying when the characters (author) isn’t creative enough to make good use of the multiple other options in the English language.

The story is well written with characters you immediately love or hate. The only complaint I have is the over use of the “f” word. It distracted me and at times made me want to quit reading.

I began reading this novel a while back but had to stop because I started working towards my degree again. But I took a break came back and finished it and I’m glad I did. The story was so intriguing and the characters were so real I loved all the details used to describe them. And what made the book such a page turner is I could not pinpoint who the real murderer was!!! Excellent story can’t wait to read the rest in the series. Thank you

Really a great 💙📚read! 👍😉 Different and enjoyable, while introducing a new venue. To me, at least. Was well-paced, and well-written, keeping my interest (enough so I stayed up reading longer than I should have on several occasions-like this morning when I couldn't go to bed without finishing it). 😳 being retired helps! Surprise ending, also! I had a couple others, back and forth, for the last few chapters. I liked the Canadian-US interaction also, cause who of us old girls don't think of the gorgeous RCMPs from our old movies and tv serials!! To say nothing of the beautiful Pacific Northwest!
