Description

This is a coffee table style book, heavy on images, and light on text. It begins with two short chapters, a preface, and an overview of the golf course. The next 18 chapters are each dedicated to an individual hole; with a brief description of the challenges presented to a golfer, a video flyover, a line drawing of the hole, and several beautiful, high quality images.

There are also chapters on the clubhouse and areas around the course with dramatic accompanying images.

The author’s favorite chapter is one of the last where she included images she either hand painted, or rendered in a painterly fashion to create spectacular artwork.

The images in this book are absolutely wonderful. From sunrise to sunset and back, the course takes on a life of its own, and it is miraculously captured by Tenna Merchent. The explanations of the holes, the best paths to play, and the diagrams all help to get one's love of golf all revved up. Finally, the flyovers are just great. They help to tie the whole hole together. Gotta run now - my golf clubs are calling my name!

"More Heaven than Hell" is more than a book about Purgatory Golf Club; it's a work of art. The images of the course are breathtaking and almost seem mythical. If you've golfed at Purgatory, you know it's awe-inspiring. If you haven't, you'll want to after you've seen the beautiful photographs of this course. In addition to the truly amazing photography, there are some great tips throughout the book on how to play the course. I need all the help I can get, so the specific tips on individual holes were really beneficial. What I found especially unique about this book was that it included videos that allow you to fly over each hole. You just can't get that perspective from the ground. While this book will certainly appeal to professional golfers and golf writers, I think anyone with an appreciation for the game or a connection to Indiana will really enjoy the book. For me, the stunning images Tenna Merchent captured of Purgatory were what made me love this book.
