From the beloved author of We All Want Impossible Things, a moving, hilarious story of a family summer vacation full of secrets, lunch, and learning to let go.
For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and—thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing—septic too.
This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.
It's one precious week: everything is in balance; everything is in flux. And when Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves.
Reviews
Ugh.
1By trese80Such an unlikeable narrator. And PC in an over-the-top way.I could have written this book, she sounds so much like me!
5By Paleo SchnauzerI laughed and laughed and laughed some more. And all the while I asked myself how did this writer know me so well? Such a perfect simple beach read with a cast of very likeable people and a very likable cat.Meh
2By Aaron and JessicaI struggled getting through this book. Rocky, the narrator/protagonist, was too whiny and ungrateful to empathize with.Sandwich
1By a.l.l.a.Very vulgar. Couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters.Finished in 2 Days
1By ihavenotimetoreadbookloverI liked the book-it was an easy read BUT maybe it should come with a trigger warning—abortion, miscarriage, lbgt are major in major parts of the story line. I particularly enjoyed the memoirs of motherhood shared with the reader! I found many parts relatable as I watch my own children grow. Also, thanks for the warning of vaginal atrophy—had no idea that was a thing as I approach perimenopause 🫣🫣Depressing empty nester story
2By TitlegurlWriting was awkward. Story Wasn’t terrible but wasn’t great. Being a newbie empty nester myself, I found this book to be more depressing than actually being an empty nester.Great summer read
5By BrianaBouvierI loved this story. Great portrait of messy family but full of humor and love and family secrets. I think it’s a complex picture of pregnancy and how different people come to different decisions about how to proceed.Too much profanity
1By JillAdams01Thought I had found someone I could relate to with menopause yet she uses the F word constantly. Take this out and I would have finished the book. It cheapens the book. Occasional use would be one thing, constant is another.Absolutely fabulous
2By ShimmeryMeganPerfect summer book with prose so alive and stunning it made me stop breathing a few times.Whut
