Description
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the first novel in his Natchez Burning trilogy—which also includes The Bone Tree and the upcoming Mississippi Blood—an epic trilogy that interweaves crimes, lies, and secrets past and present in a mesmerizing thriller featuring Southern lawyer and former prosecutor Penn Cage.
Raised in the southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering the African American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Once a crusading prosecutor, Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses even to speak in his own defense.
Penn's quest for the truth sends him deep into his father's past, where a sexually charged secret lies. More chilling, this long-buried sin is only one thread in a conspiracy of greed and murder involving the vicious Double Eagles, an offshoot of the KKK controlled by some of the most powerful men in the state. Aided by a dedicated reporter privy to Natchez's oldest secrets and by his fiancée, Caitlin Masters, Penn uncovers a trail of corruption and brutality that places his family squarely in the Double Eagles' crosshairs.
With every step costing blood and faith, Penn is forced to confront the most wrenching dilemma of his life: Does a man of honor choose his father or the truth?
Reviews
The bone tree
1By Rayhawk4563One of the worst books I’ve read. Everyone makes the wrong move in this book. The author’s first books were good. The last that I read were terrible.Gut-wrenching read
5By RandyGarmonIn need of a good editor, but still a great read, especially if you have Southern roots.Interesting but hard read
4By Jana ChownsI put this book down several times. I came back to it because I always finish my book before starting a new one. I absolutely loved his previous books. But this one was slow to start and hard to follow. There were parts that were unbelievable in the end but eventually a good read. I will continue to rad the next book in the series.Natchez Burning
1By Mitchell356Could this story be any slower? It is an inch by inch minute by minute telling of the story. I almost never give up on a book—it has been years since I gave up on the last one. I gave up on this one.Disappointed
3By JoPaDumI have enjoyed everything I’ve read by Greg Iles, which is why I chose this book. This was disappointing. To long, to much repetition and characters that could all die and no one would care. Am I supposed to want to read the next book??? Because I don’t.captivating story
5By CreekNinewhile fiction, there are a whole lot of truths that most of us have never faced. Sad the hatred that can be in a person’s heart. BillKeep going
5By Burndoc901A slow start but then the action starts and you can’t put the book down.Natchez Burning
3By Bobby DominguezI have always loved Greg Isles' work. I partially liked this one too, however the end was agonizingly long and unbelievable. I needed an end 100 pages sooner. I am reluctant to read the sequel. Seems the story is told. Bob Dominguez, Universal City, TXToo long tedious
1By ShamuSinghThe worst Greg Iles book written he should have cut himself a southern deal he keeps talking about in his book.... Buried this book at Bone Tree and definitely not dug it up. Ugghhh what waste of time!Excellent
5By Palerider417One of the best books I've read this year. Very human characters come alive. People you care about and some you hate. The added dimensions of the town and it's history add a depth that is breathtaking. Started the book yesterday. 150 pages in and I can't put it down.Too long
5By StaynavytomGreat book but about 1/4 I didn't read because it was filler. What a waste of money & time
1By Mmmmom123456Holy cow what a disappointment. For that crappy ending, you could have cut out about half the book. Between that and all the diatribe about what crappy people we Mississippians are, I'm done with Greg Iles. Huge waste of moneyNatchez burning
1By PpmflI'm a big Greg ills fan, but this book is 200-300 pages tooo looong ! I'm srry I wasted the time and money on this book . Wish it came with a money back garentee ! LolExcellent
5By batmack2I really couldn't put this book down.. It was long, hard to figure out at times, overly disturbing in its depiction of the cruelness of that time, drawn out and melodramatic with some of its characters, but I was hooked. Totally agree with comments about the ending but that's what it is supposed to be as the first in a series.....lots of loose ends still hanging out there, Hurry up and write the next one.Great Story
5By Peter 14I read lots of books and this is the best one I have read in two years. It's an exciting story with strong historical ties. I'm going to read another of his books next! Great writer...Tired Genre
1By rockyvestI am so tired of books that oppress the progress of Mississippi by the continued focus its troubled racial past.Karen Mitchell
5By Miss. KayAnnI love this book. Could not put it down. Thank you. Can't wait for the next one!
5By TexasBlueMCFCThe awaited return of Greg Iles and Penn Cage was well worth it. This is the first book in a trilogy and the reason some of the plot was left unresolved. Great plot, great storytelling by Iles! Loved it!Powerful Southern Tale of Truth and Final Justice
5By Bollie MitThis book brings to life a time in our not-too-distant past about righting our wrongs and accepting our fate. Many things may have been fiction, yet the powerful story of young love and it's costs still exist today. One can only imagine how many Albert Norris and Pooky Wilson's gone long and forgotten over the years. This story makes you wonder just hoe much of southern history we live among today but are completely clueless of the real story. I patiently awake what comes next in this gripping tale as it will unfold.
