“Silence” by Japanese writer Shusaku Endo was first published in 1966. It is a historical fiction that revolves around a Jesuit missionary.

The Jesuit missionary is sent to Japan in the seventeenth century. The Christians had to remain hidden during that period. It was the time of persecution and the missionary had to endure the persecution.

After his arrival and time spent there, the Shimabara Rebellion was defeated.

“Silence” is considered as the author’s supreme achievement. It won the Tanizaki Prize in the year 1966. It is also regarded as one of the 20th century’s finest novels.
