Description

New York Times-bestselling author Robin Cook takes on the cutting-edge world of gene-modification in this pulse-pounding new medical thriller.

When an unidentified, seemingly healthy young woman collapses suddenly on the New York City subway and dies upon reaching the hospital, her case is an eerie reminder for veteran medical examiner Jack Stapleton of the 1918 flu pandemic. Fearful of a repeat on the one hundredth anniversary of the nightmarish contagion, Jack autopsies the woman within hours of her demise and discovers some striking anomalies: first, that she has had a heart transplant, and second, that, against all odds, her DNA matches that of the transplanted heart.

Although the facts don't add up to influenza, Jack must race against the clock to identify the woman and determine what kind of virus could wreak such havoc--a task made more urgent when two other victims succumb to a similar rapid death. But nothing makes sense until his investigation leads him into the fascinating realm of CRISPR/CAS9, a gene-editing biotechnology that's captured the imagination of the medical community. . . and the attention of its most unethical members. Drawn into the dark underbelly of the organ transplant market, Jack will come face-to-face with a megalomaniacal businessman willing to risk human lives in order to conquer a lucrative new frontier in medicine--and if Jack's not careful, the next life lost might be his own.

  • Pandemic indeed!

Reading this was like LIVING a pandemic, in that I felt like I died, inside, after each chapter. I thought with a title like Pandemic, I’d get suspense, frantic, impending doom. Instead the result was a story that never got out of second gear. And the main character... just WOW. An absolutely unlikable, childish, selfish douche bag with anger issues. Pretty much a dreadful read.

Do not let the title fool you. This stupid book has NOTHING to do with an outbreaking global pandemic. Instead we dive into the life of an immature husband and father with stupid issues that we don’t care about. The interactions of Jack the Clowndoctor with everybody infuriated me. Is Robin Cook trying to be cute? Is this an attempt at humor? I wanted a serious, scary, suspense story and i got a bad comedy grind. This book really sucked

Worst book I’ve ever read. 1500 pages (online edition that is) of waiting for the shoe to fall and it never fell. Pace of the book was agonizing. When you see a tittle “Pandemic”, you hope to read of an actual Pandemic. Instead its a story following around some guy with personal issues!!!

The detail of the beginning led to a long buildup to nothing. The second half of the story was left out. No follow up Would have been better if the billionaire blew up the shark at the end!

For only half a story, this author lends a whole new meaning to the term VERBOSITY !

I love Cook. My this book kinda of fizzled out towards the end. Gave it four stars only because I love Jack and Laurie

I just finish reading Robin Cook novel Charlatans. I have always been a follower of Mr. Cook I have read all of his books. But I found the last two books not as captivating as his earlier writing. But still I can’t wait for his next book.

In my opinion this book was awful. It read like an amateur wrote it. I hadn’t read Cook for years and am surprised as how bad this is. Odd and awkward.
